Let me know if you give it a try curtis. Aurora has a steep learning curve but I've found it to be a fantastic gem. Really open ended how you design your fleets. The A.I can give you a real run for your money as well when you finally encounter non player races. You also can discover some nasty suprises lurking about in deep space such as ancient automated defence craft (think guardian from master of orion) or other "space monster" type finds

I certainly will try it when I get the time. It sounds like a cool game is it open source?

Track Mania was a brilliant game I really enjoyed playing it.

Urban Terror, a free ioQuake based online multiplayer FPS. It requires only a 25 k/s connection, so it's perfect for when my family hogs the connection, and it can run on my old linux box(1.2 ghz, 256mb RAM, Integrated Graphics) and my laptop(1.6 ghz intel celeron, 512mb RAM, unknown discreet graphics), and still looks good on my 20' monitor. It also can be run from a USB stick, and only takes up ~900mb of storage.

The Battle for Wesnoth (an heroic-fantasy turn-based strategy game).

I've gotten a lot of mileage out of Doom Roguelike, Battle for Wesnoth and Spelunky. Great games.

I don't like it, but I thought some people would like to know that the original command and conquer are now freeware.

My favourite would have to be Trackmania United, but that may be because I only found it yesterday.

Two pages and nobody mentioned Iji? I'm surprised.

It's a great Metroidvania with an Another Worldish graphical style and an RPGish upgrade system. Definately worth playing.

At this moment, it would be Gunz: The Duel... Its free to play and download, but the only problem is that you need internet connection for it, but overall its a good game, I haven't had any lag problems on there yet.

Iji is good fun, but lacks long term appeal. In a review, I called it Flashback crossed with Metroid and System Shock!

Battlezone, from 1998. It used to be a full retail game, but given the fact it isn't being sold anymore, as well as the amount of sites that offer it as a free download, it looks as though it's become freeware. Somehow, it's tied in third place with Half-Life and Unreal Tournament 2004 on Gamespot's top PC games of all time list, and yet practically no one's heard of it. :(

There's also an expansion called Battlezone: The Red Odyssey, as well as a full sequel called Battlezone II: Combat Commander that are both probably floating around the internet as well. :)
