^^ Greetings Mouldy. I believe I very much enjoy playing within roleplaying servers. However, I believe that some roleplaying servers contain players, the majority of whom do not roleplay. This take place I believe for instance within my main server Sporeggar. ^^However I believe happy players within both of my servers are very friendly.

I believe that I shall happily wait for the Cataclysm expansion pack to be released to subscribe. I believe I shall then create a a happy Gnome or Worgen character. (Perhaps a priest, druid or rogue)

Well, that's not entirely accurate . . . places like Goldshire and the similar place in Tirisfal for the Horde, and RP hubs. However, Goldshire is known by another name . . . Pornshire given the preference for the players there to engage in ERP (erotic role-play). Don't worry, the Horde's Silvermoon City is about the same at times (also called SilvERP Moon). That aside, leveling on an RP realm is a bit refreshing at times because a good portion of the people are acting in character and the conversations/events can become interesting or comical . . . it's fairly addictive after a while.

Proudmoore for Alliance Toons - Rogue 80, DK 80, Paladin 80
Underbog for Horde Toons - Shaman 80, Warrior 80, Priest 30

Anyone play, or ever played, at a Private server?

The fees are becoming excessive and I'm thinking of switching.

I really enjoy my roleplay server, and specificly because I did venture into the whole roleplaying business. It is much much more than being in goldshire, and much more than ERP. If you ever want to know more about roleplaying, just check out the realm forums. Atleast here on the EU side, we have plenty of guides on how to rp. Most serious rp'ers walk a big circle around goldshire.
I can generally say most people are much more friendly, of course there is still bad seeds, but people are generally more relaxed and not so elitist. Of course there is both high end pve and pvp guilds, and yes there clearly are more non-rp'ers than rp'ers, but still the RP realms have specific rules, and no matter if you Rp or not, you need to follow them ^^

I have not tried it myself, but I have had friends that did.
Private servers are first and foremost illegal. This means that Blizzard can at any moment close the private servers, and if you play on your normal account it will be banned. If the owners of the private server does not close it down, Blizzard can take legal action against them. If a server closes down, you lose everything you had on it, with no way of restoreing it. The more known the server is, the more likely it is that Blizzard will shut them down.
Secondly, alot of private realms have terrible lag and are poorly updated. Usually not paying a fee, means that you get a poor game quality, as the owners of the server oftenly do not have the money to keep things updated.
I won't recommend playing on a private realm. Those friends I had who did it, all stopped or went back to normal WoW.

They are only illegal if you play both a wow server and a private server at the same time. As long as your account is associated with only a private server or only wow they cannot do anything.

My main reservation is not having enough people using the server to play in groups randomly. If only WoW was more affordable.

Private servers are illegal whether or not you have a regular WoW account.

As for all the negative stuff on Goldshire forgive me for saying this and I know about the ERP stuff that goes on for a lot of players sadly it is the main place they come into contact with Role players and I know it can be bad but on my realm at least there have been times that some RP that has taken place there more so late at night was pretty good. I think the time of day makes a difference. I would think the same goes for Silvermoon with the horde.

Oh don't get me wrong, SMC does have it's times (course i think the ERP has migrated to Eversong Woods now), and personally, I've never come across any of that stuff in SMC (unless i'm just lucky, or time of day does matter). Granted, did come across a couple NE Lezzies in K3 once >.> (kinda hard for a horde not to notice the compromising positions). I guess one shouldn't mind if the folks are being discreet, and I'll give credit to those who find out of the way areas. But some people should have the sense to not do that in business hubs.

I play on the Oceanic server Khaz'goroth as a druid called Astral. I have 2 other characters on the same server I don't play nearly as much.

When I have played on WoW, I tend to stick to Anvilmar but have been on others. Don't really play much anymore too busy with SC2 as well as GW and all getting prepped for GW2. :)

Or Jinxcat, Dinstockle, Asaini, Desilnei, Gomaria, or Duskhowl come Cataclysm.
