I tend to agree with your point, and it's pretty much why I tend to broaden my horizons to nearly everything from simple flash games to new popular games.
i'd say that playing a broad range of games makes you more of a gamer than confining yourself to a single genre as other game genres can teach new skills and strategies in especially tactical FPS games like CoD, especially the one skill of thinking on your feet and being able to think up new tactics on the go...
The above is the main reason why I like the Wipeout series that much. The games are fast, require a fair amount of strategy and gives you little time to think as well as little mercy when you screw up. The same goes for a fair lot of Flash games as they usually make up for lack of graphics by adding technical puzzles.
