Duke Nukem Forever getting a bad reputation for nothing?

After seeing some reviews I think what has happened so they made the game linear and story driven, like pretty much all shooters these days. Instead of going around and blowing stuff up and finding secrets and getting cool guns you follow a colourful tunnel, only use guns available, limited ammo, etc. So it lost one of the cool things about the original, the exploration of the map. The limited weapons and stuff, is more an issue with consoles having far less input control vs the PC (controller vs mouse and keyboard is a massive difference).

So yeah I guess I will say it, making an old PC shooter fit the console mould hurt the game a lot.

It's official, Duke Nukem Forever is crap.

So it takes all the best parts of games and then makes fun of them.

That's what Yahtzee does best. But he genuinely dislikes Duke Nukem Forever.

I loved his first review, the fake one. The guy who contacted him afterwards asking him for where to obtain a copy was obviously irony impaired.

While I cannot say whether it is crap or not, given that I haven't played it (nor do I intend to), are the generally negative reviews really a surprise? This game has been in development since the late nineties. Not all vaporware turns out to be good, and sometimes what it needs is a major overhaul. Some vaporware of course has turned out to be better than considered at times. You have Team Fortress 2, Mother 3, and Dissidia: Final Fantasy. But I am sure that for all those success stories, there are far more failures.

The ego boost mechanic, from what I've heard about it, still sounds interesting.
