I did download Commander Keen 2, 3, 5 and 6 too. They were free.

I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying that any site that has Commander Keen 2, 3, 5, and 6 available for download is hosting them illegally. Like, plenty of sites have NES roms, but that doesn't mean they're freeware. When I said freeware, I meant actually free from a legal perspective.

This isn't a game you download per say, but it's a flash game that I really like samorost. There is also a sequel.

I think some games released by Epic Megagames have been made freeware recently, like Traffic Department, One Must Fall 2097 and Tyrian. They're great games but most people nowadays will need to run them in Dosbox if they want to play them. I sometimes have a little trouble running games bug-free in that.

I started playing that Cave Story game you mentioned 666. It's really good! I haven't played a good 2D platformer for ages. IMO, 3D platformers have a totally different feel from 2D ones. The new ones all have an emphasis on collecting things, which I hate. I wish more developers would bring out 2D platformers. The only recent good ones that come to mind are the recent Metal Slug ports for PS2.

Most DOS games that are no longer being supported by their parent companies eventually fall under the catagory of Abandonware. Abandonia is a great site for Abandonware (I personally recommend Strife, it was the final game using Doom's engine, it works best with ZDooM.)

For the card gamers out there. There's Apprentice, for Magic: The Gathering, and Yugoh Virtual Desktop for YGO players. I've also found a very well make online battle program for Pokemon enthusiasts: Pokemon Netbattle. What else...

At swirve.com we have Utopia and Earth:2025. Utopia is a more team oriented turn based strategy game, while Earth can be played alone. They both have sort of the same premise. Build Army, Go to war, become most powerful nation. When you learn how to play and start getting into it, both games have a great deal of depth in strategic possibilities. And they become very fun to play.

I've already got Strife. I'm a pretty big Doom fanatic.

Not freeware, but I LOVE roms.

Especially n64 ones..

Warning: this is not an advertisement, please delete any roms you download after 24 hours, unless you own the cartridge..

*cough*

Zelda Classic is freeware. It is an exact copy of the original NES Zelda. You can also download other user-created quests, with updated visuals and play them, as well as making your own maps.

Zelda Classic is kinda hard to build with. I'd like to see a good WinGUI version instead of the clunky DOS based one. (Note- Haven't checked on Zelda Classic in long time. So disregard if my wish as already been granted). Still a great program though.

TA Spring

Never played the original Total Annihilation, but I'm enjoying this game a lot so far. Haven't played with human players yet, still practicing with bots and learning how to play.

I play adventure games, but no one seems to play those. :( I like the ones at this site: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/

Oh yeah, just thought of another game by Epic Megagames, a dungeon crawler called Castle of the Winds. I found that far more fun than Diablo, which was similar but seemed far more tedious.

Another game is Falcon's Eye, which is a game based on a much older game called Nethack. It's another dungeon crawler, more complex and more fun that most others. But it's ridiculously hard, I'm really bad at it.

What's wrong with chiptune music?

Nobody said it was bad. In fact, I listen to the Cave Story soundtrack on its own all the time. I mean, it's that good. Not in spite of its chiptune-ness; on the contrary, it's part of the charm.
