ah.... in game storylines... one of the main reasons I play games

mass effect series
dragon age series
half-life 2 + episodes
World of warcraft
fallout 2 ( I found the story in fallout3 to be lacking... I mean no option to tell your dad "I left your 'safe' vault because they tried to kill me!" kinda like rail roaded story with sharp bends, easy to fall off ;) )
elderscrolls: Morrowind (oblivion to me seemed to have sections, that if it was a book, would read at the end of a chapter "re-read last chapter 3 more times and the go on to the next page")
eve-online (I know it doesn't really have a storyline in the traditional sense, it's more like an evolving back story with lots of room to make your own story)

I especially like how in masseffect and to a lesser extent dragon age, how if you import your game from the previous game in the series, you get little side conversations about how your decisions are working out in the background. (like if you choose to save the rachni queen in masseffect 1)

I play mainly RPGs and by far my favorite story in any game is Final Fantasy 7. It's long enough. It's got enough events in it to string the story together.

Clocktower 2: The Struggle Within and Resident Evil 4. But I'm also a huge fan of the Silent Hill games.

Mother 3 and Tales of Monkey Island had my favorite story lines in a video game: action, comedy and drama/tears.

Advent Rising was awesome. Wish they didn't end it on a cliffhanger.

There's a couple of games with good stories that stood out to me. I tend to like the ones that have great character interactions. Two that come to mind right now are Splatterhouse and Nier.

There are tons of storylines that I've loved through my years of gaming, but I'm going to list the ones that I'll always remember and had the most fun playing, weather or not they are recognised as some of the "best" storylines is another matter :P

ICO
Shadow of the Colossus
Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure (OR "The Puppet Princess" in Japan)
Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey
Red Dead Redemption

... Can't really think of anymore right now :P

Ah, storylines, my specialty :) .

1.) Metal Gear Solid 3. (The Boss alone is reason enough to play through this absorbing experience.)

2.) Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. (A simulated warzone designed to ensnare the legendary Solid Snake. Raises many important sociological questions that I think many aspies would find intriguing.)

3.) Red Dead Redemption. (While its story was a little cliched and familiar, I couldn't help but to become engrossed by the (mis-)adventures of John Marsten. It's brilliance comes from the way in which the story unfolds, not the story itself.)

4.) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. (All Star Wars enthusiasts need to own this game. Everything in this work of art recreates all elements of classic Star Wars perfectly. Oh, and then there's that plot twist . . .)

5.) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords. (Not as good as the first in the series, but the lore surrounding the Force is greatly expanded upon. Sets the scene for the forthcoming The Old Republic mmorpg.)

6.) Pretty Much Anything Final Fantasy. (Let's face it, this franchise is home to some of the best stories ever conceived anywhere in the world. Lately, however, the quality of FF titles has varied considerably. Nevertheless, it remains a great source of inspiration of mine.)

7.) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. (A mournful story of the fate of a world under threat from an impending disaster. There are allusions between the world of Termina and the real world in a number of ways, many of which relating to mythology.)

There are many more than I have listed here, but the worth of a truly great storyline has to be experienced first-hand, not by the accounts of others whose interpretations may vary wildly from your own.

That's where I go for story. Suppose it depends on what kind of story you like. To each their own.

Okay, perhaps I was being a tad hyperbolic. Chalk it up to fan bias :P .

Don't get me wrong I like them, but best stories in the world? I dunno man.

Most of them that I've played from #6 onwards have some great moments in them but they usually aren't consistently good. All of them are pretty substantially flawed (except 10 overall).

Stopped looking to them for decent stories after 13 (not that any new ones have come out, lol - Type-O/Versus looking good though). That one was quite a mess.

I enjoy them, but best stories ever conceived anywhere in the world? Hardly.

Operative word being "some", I meant that they rank right up there with the best, and when considering them as examples I happened to be thinking of Final Fantasy VI-X, in particular; though I agree that XIII was lacking in plot.

Type-0 and Versus do, indeed, look promising, but I have to confess that would I prefer it if Hironobu Sakaguchi would return to helm the series. Metal Gear Solid 3 definitely ranks in my personal top 10 for overall storyline; I actually wept at the end of that game  .

Lol I have no idea who that guy is.

Best RPG story I've played in a while is The World Ends With You. You should give it a go if you get the chance.

He created FF and produced a number of other titles such as Vagrant Story (another personal favourite of mine) and Kingdom Hearts. After leaving Square he took a portion of that company's many talented artists and designers with him to form a new game development studio, Mistwalker. It is not doing so well.

The World Ends With You? Isn't that a DS game? I was really eager to play that after reading a synopsis on it at Square-Enix's website, but sadly I don't have a DS because I preferred the specs of the PSP. Which has turned out to be somewhat disappointing thus far, with only Valkyria Chronicles 2 and Birth by Sleep as stand-outs.

Another series that really needs to make a comeback is Breath of Fire. I really liked Dragon Quarter (though it seems many didn't).
