Chrono Cross, hands down. I had no qualms shelling out $38 to buy the soundtrack from an Otaku store down in Harvard Square some years back.
Xenosaga 3 also has an incredible soundtrack. I might have to pirate that one.
Anything done by Yasunori Mitsuda and Yuki Kaijura is awesome.
Bah- I completely forgot Secret of Mana! Best 16-bit soundtrack EVER!!

I can think of quite a few I personally liked, but I don't wanna share them.

I actually liked the Age of Conan Soundtrack believe it or not. Too bad the game turned out to be a train wreck after the starting area :(

Personally, I love the soundtrack of Megaman X. It always gets me pumped when I'm playing the game. Now, I also like the music from other Megaman games, but X is my favorite.

I think the music in Zelda: Ocarina of Time is brilliant as well.

As already mentioned in the topic, I think that Chrono Trigger has one of the best soundtracks in the history of the video games IMO.

If I have to suggest a great ost, I'd say Riviera.for PSP. This game made me interested about videogame music more than every game I played.

I don't think The Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim have soundtracks, but they are the most beautiful scores I've heard in a video-game. Dragon Age has a good score as well. As far as soundtracks go, I enjoyed GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas soundtracks. 8)

Eternal Sonata and Wild Arms also had pretty good music, I think. And many of the Final Fantasy games.

did anyone ever play toejam and earl I or II? possibly most creative and best fitting soundtracks ever for a video game. really complicated layered stuff for that time, too.

strider (even though the music sounds like a souped up version of the old NBA theme written by john tesh)
castlevania I and II
mario I, II, III
pitfall harry on the c64, i dunno if it was different on different platforms
sonic I (especially the last act) and II
streets of rage II
friday the 13th on nes
splatterhouse II (cheesy, but i like it)
sub-terrania
there's a really crazy game called nightmare carnival for genesis that i could never figure out how to play, but it had awesome music..
