I'm not a fan of Half-Life 2 either though--again, there's no plot. "Okay, let's go here and blow this up. Now we're going here and getting this cool new weapon that shows off our physics programming abilities! Now we're going here to blow this up, but first we need to go through here and kill these zombies...and now we're going here to blow this up...and LOOK! THE G-MAN IS BACK, and as always, he's talking nonsense! Roll credits! WOW! Brilliant! I can't wait to find out what happens...or what just did happen...or really what the hell any of this is all about. Hmm. Hey, didn't this same thing happen with F.E.A.R.?"
Speaking like that, anyone can make it seem as though Half-Life 2 has no plot. Either way, gameplay is more important than story in video games (especially first-person shooters). If you are implying that Half-Life 2 copied F.E.A.R., Half-Life 2 was released about a year before F.E.A.R.
I've never played Halo 2 because I don't have an Xbox. However, I enjoyed Halo.
Oh, I certainly wasn't implying that Half-Life 2 ripped off F.E.A.R. I was making a statement on the atrocious and murky "storytelling" found in the highest-profile first person shooters. While I agree that gameplay is important, I need a good story to give a crap about what's going on. If nothing makes me care about these characters or these situations, then the FPS just becomes yet another soulless shooting game in my mind. Which describes pretty much every modern FPS, or really pretty much every modern game period. If a film has a nonexistant plot, awful acting, and horrendous cliche dialogue then it's going to be bashed and the public will reject it (well--unless it's a "Star Wars" prequel), but if a game has a nonexistant plot, awful acting, and horrendous cliche dialogue, then nobody cares because it's the norm. I wish more developers would step up to the plate and go beyond pushing polygons, and raise the standards of their art form in another way. But of course it's so much easier to just make another FPS where you shoot cyborgs, or Arabs, or Vietnamese, or Nazi's, or Orcs, and have absolutely no plot to back any of it up.
