I have always considered Halo 1 to be a mediocre or average FPS game. I never got into this series because I do not own an X-Box console, and I didn't like Halo 1 enough to spark an interest in playing the rest of the series.

I'm not a fan of Half-Life 2 either though--again, there's no plot. "Okay, let's go here and blow this up. Now we're going here and getting this cool new weapon that shows off our physics programming abilities! Now we're going here to blow this up, but first we need to go through here and kill these zombies...and now we're going here to blow this up...and LOOK! THE G-MAN IS BACK, and as always, he's talking nonsense! Roll credits! WOW! Brilliant! I can't wait to find out what happens...or what just did happen...or really what the hell any of this is all about. Hmm. Hey, didn't this same thing happen with F.E.A.R.?"

Speaking like that, anyone can make it seem as though Half-Life 2 has no plot. Either way, gameplay is more important than story in video games (especially first-person shooters). If you are implying that Half-Life 2 copied F.E.A.R., Half-Life 2 was released about a year before F.E.A.R.

I've never played Halo 2 because I don't have an Xbox. However, I enjoyed Halo.

Oh, I certainly wasn't implying that Half-Life 2 ripped off F.E.A.R. I was making a statement on the atrocious and murky "storytelling" found in the highest-profile first person shooters. While I agree that gameplay is important, I need a good story to give a crap about what's going on. If nothing makes me care about these characters or these situations, then the FPS just becomes yet another soulless shooting game in my mind. Which describes pretty much every modern FPS, or really pretty much every modern game period. If a film has a nonexistant plot, awful acting, and horrendous cliche dialogue then it's going to be bashed and the public will reject it (well--unless it's a "Star Wars" prequel), but if a game has a nonexistant plot, awful acting, and horrendous cliche dialogue, then nobody cares because it's the norm. I wish more developers would step up to the plate and go beyond pushing polygons, and raise the standards of their art form in another way. But of course it's so much easier to just make another FPS where you shoot cyborgs, or Arabs, or Vietnamese, or Nazi's, or Orcs, and have absolutely no plot to back any of it up.

Everything Halo/2 has done, I've seen other games in the past have already done, and in some cases, much better than Halo/2 has done.

Am I the only one who doesn't "get" the Halo hype? Then again, who am I to talk? I <3 Doom and anything pertaining to Doom. Still, though, I don't get what's so "great" or "revolutionary" about Halo/2.

What's Halo/2?

What's Halo/2?

Rather than typing out Halo and Halo 2, I shortened it using a rather crude abbreviation.

Thus, Halo/2 = Halo and Halo 2.

Oh hell yeah, Max Payne, its sequel, and Mafia are all incredible games. As cinematic and moving as games come.

I guess I'm the only one here that does like the game series a lot (despite the topic name?) :P

The thing I like about the Halo series was that the story was a central part of the games. In other FPS games like DooM 3, it seemed the story was kind of slapped on - like the story was just an excuse to shoot some stuff. But in Halo, it seemed reversed. (Which does kind of make sense, as the early game Halo was being developed as an Adventure / 3rd person shooter game for the Mac, before MS bought Bungie and made it be the star of the Xbox)

I can't think of much bad about the games, other than some might not like the pace of it, or that it uses the story rather than new characters, guns, and areas to keep interest in the player (that seems to be where most don't like it - heck, the me when I first started playing it didn't like the change for a while).

And the online is great in the 2nd game. Show me a game with as well of a thought out online and multiplayer system, and... I'll decide what when you show me. I don't know of any other game that you can get into a 'party' (group) with a few buddies, play a custom match for a while on your favorite level with maybe a specific weapon set enabled playing in a customized game type, and then decide you want to do something else, so you end the game, and while you're still all together (Almost all other online games I've played require you to wait out 'til the game hits its limits, like frag or time limit, or for all to leave the game, and regroup), go into a matchmaking game together and be grouped up automatically against similarly skilled players in a playlist of your choice. Then decide you like the attitude of Bob on the other team, so you send him a friend request after the game, he joins your party, and you go back into the matchmaking system again all on the same team.
