Some games, which have gone sorely unmentioned (shame on you all!):

Master of Orion
Fallout 1+2
Baldur's Gate trilogy
Thief
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Total Annihilation
Mech Warrior
THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND
Myst
Leisure Suit Larry 6
Daggerfall
Wing Commander
Tomb Raider
Duke Nukem 3D

Honestly, playing these games is as simple as grabbing an older computer to play them on. Most probably wouldn't run on a modern computer.

Don't forget Masters of Magic, it's like civilization only with wizards and spells.

I would recommend getting Planescape: Torment off of GOG and following this guide: http://thunderpeel2001.blogspot.co.uk/2 ... odded.html - it's a fantastic game that, while it admittedly would do nothing for someone looking for action, manages to be incredibly well written, offer a great variety of choice and explore the concepts of immortality and the nature of a person, and whether it can be changed.

RPGs
Arcanum
Planescape: Torment
Fallout 1&2
Anachronox
Ultima 7
System Shock 2
Ultima Underworld
Arx Fatalis
Gothic
Baldur's Gate 1&2
Neverwinter Nights Diamond
Daggerfall
Morrowind
The first third of Lionheart

City Builders
Zeus
Startopia
Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom
Pharoah
Simcity 2000
Tropico (Don't mess with Pirate's Cove)

Strategy
Jagged Alliance 1&2 (Mostly 2)
Syndicate (More action, but whatevs)
Dungeon Keeper 2
Alpha Centauri
Civ IV (Don't gimme that V nonsense)
Ground Control
Homeworld & Cataclysm. (Homeworld 2 wasn't bad either, but Cataclysm was a tough act to follow)
Sacrifice
M.U.L.E.
Cossacks 1-2
Fallout Tactics
Conflict: Middle East Crisis (Ancient, but the most realistic Middle East simulator. And probably the only Middle East simulator.)
Would say Total War, but the "Classics" don't stand up

Action
Tomb Raider 1-3
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
Outcast (Elder Scrolls meets Stargate meets Bruce Willis meets hilariously bad animation)
Thief I & Especially II (Not really action, but whatev)

Adventure
The Longest Journey
Maniac Mansion
Monkey Island 1-3 (I LIKED 3. Don't judge me.)
Dreamfall
Beneath a Steel Sky
Myst & Riven
Neuromancer
Full Throttle
Come to think of it, anything made by Lucasarts
...
Except for Rebel Assault.

Oddness
Creatures
King of Dragon Pass (Get it. Don't think. Buy. Hard as crap, graphics suck, but there has never and will never be another game like it.)

It's easier to just set your mounting options in the config file.

For instance, mine looks like this:

@mount c e:\games\dosbox\
@imgmount d e:\games\(cdrom).cue -t iso
@c:

That will mount a folder as a hard drive, and a BIN/CUE as a CD-ROM drive (or ISO instead, or whatever file format), and then will automatically switch to C:\ for you.

The @ sign basically does an "echo off" command for you, so it won't show those lines being "typed".

Yes.

Though I would suggest, if one has any interest in Thief III, to start with that game to avoid disappointment.

You have to play it on the PC with the patch to be able to play in any other difficulty setting besides easy, and if you wish to play it at the most difficult setting (which is how the games are truley experienced), it no longer penalizes you for killing if they are combatants, so you just have to go by the "honor system" on that one to make it like the previous games. You previously were not allowed to kill ANYONE; "blood is the mark of an amature", as Garrett used to say.

I would highly recommend playing Planescape: Torment, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, Sid Meier's Civilisation and Sonic 3 and Knuckles. All of those except for Daggerfall and Sonic should be available on GOG, Sonic is on Steam and Daggerfall is available for free download on the Bethesda site, in addition to fan made versions that come with fixes and mods installed.
