It doesn't have to be expensive, you can buy single common/uncommon cards at any game store for 10 cents to 25 cents a piece. Land I think is normally like 5 cents a piece and that's normally more than a 3rd of your deck. So yeah, you can build a cheap deck for $3-$4 if you were so inclined.

I tend to run a 60 card deck, which I'm told is fairly streamlined. How thick/thin a deck can one run?

60 is pretty standard, but the rules have a 40 card minimum. Most constructed tournament decks run 60 cards as far as I know, or they did last time I followed the game. However sealed formats, due to a limited card pool, typically run as close to 40 as possible. You usually have so few forms of removal that you want to increase your odds of getting them when you need them.

60 is the minimum for constructed decks(decks that aren't built in a limited format such as a sealed deck or draft tournament). In sealed deck and draft events, the minimum deck size is 40 cards. You can have as many cards as you want in your deck though, as long as you're able to shuffle it without help. Eelektrik is right, generally you want to have the minimum number of cards in your deck, that way you increase the odds of drawing the best cards in your deck.

There's also another format which is generally quite casual called Commander(or EDH, short for Elder Dragon Highlander). In that format, you have one legendary creature which you put aside, and a 100 card deck in which no two cards are the same. There's a whole set of rules which you can find here: http://dragonhighlander.net/rules.php

It's especially good for casual multiplayer games with friends. I recommend you check it out if you're into multiplayer with friends. :)

I brought a deck builder's toolkit and I pulled a Bonfire of the Damned, which is worth than what I paid for the entire box of 300 cards, but I don't have anyone to play or trade with. Where are you guys at?

I'm in Minnesota. Luckily a lot of people play in my area. :) Some really good players even. A few weeks ago at the Prerelease sealed event I beat a guy ranked 12th in the world in the current season, en route to a 4-0 finish. I'm lucky I get to play in the area that I do!
