I'm aware of the basis behind Skype, just not the fine nitty gritty, I guess is the best way to put it. Well, to be fair, I don't fully get Vent either. I had another guy who knew the whole nine yards, but I had to get rid of him since he wasn't doing...too cool stuff....What I do think I know is my server...or at least my end anyway, I suspect the server would be capable of this, is that the codec is Speex, and the format is 32 KHz, 16 bit and 10 Quality. Again, I'm just reading stuff off my Vent settings, so I have no idea what any of that means. You're welcome to it, should you choose, but in any case, that's enough of that.

I'm also willing to try Skype, and as far as availability...well, since I don't have a job...or a life....if I'm awake, I'm online, so my schedule will work with practically anyone's. I'll keep an eye here though, to make sure I don't miss anything. Can't wait though. Sounds like it'd be a blast!

Well, I just checked, and your quality settings for Ventrilo are higher than that of Skype. Skype only supports up to 24kHz. 32kHz is still pretty low quality, but we're not recording a CD here (CD standard is 44.1kHz), so I doubt it'll ever be a problem or that we'll even have a need to increase the audio quality in any significant way. One thing I do like about Skype, though, is that it supports video chat, if anyone has a webcam they might want to use for whatever reason. I'll certainly keep your server in mind if it turns out that Skype's having significant audio issues.

Sorry, but I'm going to have to back out. Something has just come up in my life that's going to take away all my free time for several months. I just found out today.

4th edition? I'm sorry, but I'll have to bow out, as I'm barely familiar with the 3rd edition.

:(

Nooo, I hate the cascade effect.

Would it be too hard for you to read about the fourth edition a bit? I only know about the third one as well, but hope the fourth wouldn't be too different and should be able to get the basics from a pdf player's handbook, and get the rest on the go. Failing that, we can always play the third edition too unless someone else disagrees. This is as good a moment as any to ask this to those who know: what are the main differences between third and fourth edition?

I have no 4th ed. materials.

The Traveller books take up all the space on the shelf.

So, I figured I'd try to garner a little bit more attention by giving the idea its own thread, rather than shoehorning it into the WP Community Game Night thread I started a while back.

Anyway, I was wondering how many people here at Wrong Planet would be interested in starting up a weekly community Dungeons & Dragons game night.

I haven't played D&D since I was in middle school, and I've been wanting to get back into it recently; find some people to play it with, and I figured here in WP's Games & Video Games section would be a good place to start looking for people who might also be interested in something like that.

It's always good to see some AD&D fans here. (I call it AD&D still, despite the fact Wizards of the Coast changed it to D&D) (I'm from the ancient days of TSR) Classic.. I have not played it in many years. I have a large collection of books, manuals, encyclopedias, bestiaries, etc. I have been busy as of late because the past few months for me have been rather chaotic and I am presently focused on other things at the moment. I am commenting here because I am a fan of such material and subject matter. It is also very possible that I may or may not be interested in being a prospective participant in gaming here. (Hectic schedule) Regardless, I am another fan who supports such stimulating games and worlds. I have always been a major fan of Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance. It's good to see others who have expressed an active interest in D&D here on WP.

That's alright- life comes first. Hope you can come back and join in sometime later down the road, once things have been sorted out and settled down.

I can distribute PDFs of the classic materials if anyone wants or needs them, if that influences your decision at all.

Feel free to join in if you have the time and inclination.

I'll think about it, but I'll need directions XD.

Additionally; chances are we'll all be looking for loopholes to become as OP as possible XD.

Same here, I only heard of it and never actually played it.

Also practical issues might play a part as I am in a very different time zone (GMT+1) and finishing school.

If this is no problem I'd like to join you.

I've never played D&D before, but since there are competent electronic tools to assist with such matters, I'd perk my ears up in interest.

Such as that one tool the SA goons used to play. That I don't know the name of but was likely made in Java.

Dangerously however, I come from the Paranoia background of Tabletop.

I'd totally be down if you made it a saturday mid-day type of thing! I have a ton of Roleplaying and DM experience. Mostly played gurps but have been in a few 4e D&D campaigns. I also regularly use roll20 in my main sunday group.

I would recomend Teamspeak over skype.

If anyone's already got a TS3 server we can use, then sure; but I can't afford to buy and host one.

Although, on a somewhat similar note, I did manage to fix my desktop, and I'll have it all set up again in time for this weekend's session, if/when that happens. My desktop's not crazy-powerful or up-to-date, but it's several large steps up from this crappy old laptop I've been stuck with since it died back in September. Meaning, I might be able to host/connect to a virtual tabletop program at some point, with my desktop, and not have an incredibly slow computer and end up bogging everyone else down.

Laptop:

OS: Microsoft Windows Visat Home Premium 32-bit
CPU: Intel Intel Core Duo T2080 @ 1.73 GHz
RAM: 1GB laptop memory
GPU: Intel G945 Integrated chipset

Desktop:

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home 32-bit
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5800+ @ 3.0 GHz
RAM: 2GB DDR2 800
GPU: 512MB ATI Radeon HD 4870

I am amused of how people are blind to the opportunities in front of them. (*Cough* gamer group post *Cough* read my signature *cough*) It's not like I have a channel or anything.

In my opinion we should organize our sessions someplace else, like the link i provided earlier. We will clog up the traffic of these forums.

NOTE: IT's not dog, it's Clog

Oops, my bad. I generally don't make a habit of reading people's signatures. Problem solved, then, if everyone's on board for it. I personally have no preference, whichever hosting method we decide to go with.

So nice to see you guys here!

My D&D was the original back around 1976/7

And Traveller, too! (Though we never really got that one together)

I will never forget that first game. I was thinking about it nostalgically the other day.

I would love to join you, though I don" t know the new rules at all. I used to dm and design.

I still love those polyhedral dice!
