I had one of those fat PS3s for a while, until a couple of years ago. My dad's had his PS3 for four years now.

My Xbox 360 is working again, I don't know how. I bought that a little over a year ago.

I had the original DS. Lasted several years. Still works, other than the fact that the case is cracked from where I dropped it two years ago.

I wish everything wasn't aimed at being online these days. I have a game downloaded onto my computer that I can't play unless I "connect to server". It's not an MMO.

I empathise with your plight.

I have over 100 of the Xbox Live DLC games ... everything from the 4 Magic the gathering DOTP games, to The Walking Dead.
With only a few noteworthy exceptions, the whole lot conk out and refuse to work at all (turning into poxy trial versions) whenever the internet won't connect, or in some cases they conk out altogether even if the connection claps out during play.

I have an ISP who regularly go through phases of being quite appalling.
It's no fun when your internet is down, to also be unable to play a bunch if games which you've paid good money for.
And a lot of them are strictly single-player games... like the original "Trials" game, or the fancy new Pacman DX game.

I hope that if the Xbox One makes XBL obsolete for the Xbox 360 (as the Xbox 360 did to the original Xbox after a while) , that somebody will have the basic decency to write a routine to make all of the Xbox Live DLC games function offline.

I had a 60 gig phat PS3 that died about 2 years ago. I miss the extra USB ports, card reader, and full backwards compatibility. I've had a PS3 Slim. Got it for Christmas. Not last Christmas, but the one before. No real issues with it, and hope it lasts a long time. I got the extended warranty. Just in case. Although even if I would have gotten the EW for the 1st PS3, it took 4-5 years to fail, so getting it on this console is more than likely a waste of cash, but whatever.

I'm fairly annoyed with the fail rates of current gen consoles, and I'm extra weary of going into next gen regardless of what the companies are saying about learning from this gen.

I won't have the resources to get into next gen right away anyways. I have no choice but to wait and see what problems occur and what gets done to resolve them. Will probably have to plan for a long time and wait for a cheaper revision in a few years.

I haven't had a single issue with my Wii since I purchased it in 2007. Nintendo consoles, in my experience, have lasted far longer than other consoles. My sister and her friends are on the lower-functioning end of the Autism spectrum, and one thing they didn't do particularly well when they were younger was looking after things! My sister's DS Lite has had it's screen cracked and it's hinge broken. It's also been thrown, scratched, stood on, and covered with handwash, juice, and milk. It still works as good as it did back in 2006. I can't speak for anyone else, but it definitely seems to me that Nintendo products are built to last.

I have an old NES that still works. Well, when you jam a small book into the slot to keep the game cartridge in place.

I agree. Nintendo consoles seemed to last forever. Most of my consoles were from Nintendo and I never had a problem with them. That's why I was taken aback with this current generation of Xbox and Playstation consoles. The general piss poor life they have and the pretty stupid oversights in design and manufacturing sullied this gen for me. Despite having great games.

Even previous gen was better in that regard. Never had issues with the original Xbox, PS2, or Gamecube. PS2 is the only old console I have left, since I sold everything else off, and I really don't foresee it having any issues for a long time.

I had my Wii for about 2 years. No issues. Still looks and works like the day I bought it. Granted, I don't use it much. It's pretty much a Netflix box. Surprisingly, the Netflix stream looks quite significantly better than the stream I get from the PS3. You would think with the PS3 being HD and I've got internet plugged in VS. Wi-Fi on Wii that it would look terrible in comparison. Nuh uh. Wii is definitely the superior Netflix box.

I also never had an issue with Nintendo handhelds. I had an original Gameboy, and a Gameboy Advance.

As far as current Nintendo products, I have no idea. I don't have an interest in handhelds anymore, and Nintendo in general lost it's appeal to me. Wii U is the only Nintendo home console I'll probably never own. Lack of games that interest me, lack of games in general. Too much emphasis on ports and remakes.

This is why I play my NES; I've had my collection for over 20 years, and it still works! :)

I once worked in the shipping department at NOA in Redmond Wa, and I was shocked at the number of NES consoles and games there still were regularly sent in for servicing. The handhelds were even tougher, one of the shift leads in the tech support department had an old Gameboy that he would throw off the second floor skybridge into the parking lot during every orientation of new employees, to demonstrate the durability of the product and to illustrate why anyone who said that they were just playing the thing and it broke was lying. He'd been using the same Gameboy since the early 90s, it still worked find despite a lot of cosmetic damage.

I have an original Gameboy that still works. The only thing wrong with it is a slightly chewed button. The only game system I ever had that stopped working was a PS2 that gave lots of disk read errors. My cousin had one of those break too, I think twice.

Really ?
8O Mine definitely doesn't do any creaking, or seem to be flimsy and cheaply made.
Really, it seems to be rather sturdy as far as the physical parts of it are concerned.

Nintendo HQ have repaired my 3DS XL so they reckon, and it was sent off a few days ago - so with any luck it should arrive tomorrow, or at the latest the day after that.

I've been through ten PS2s. ***TEN*** of them. I consider it the single worst machine that I've ever had the extreme displeasure of owning, using, or being on the same planet as. Downright hideous thing.

Compared to that nightmare of a device.... I dont find the current ones all that bad.

8O TEN !?!?!?

That's... wow.
I think that's really terrible luck.

I've had a lot of fortune with the one PS2 which I've ever had.

It was cheap to begin with, because I bought it refurbished off Ebay.
It survived the postal system just fine.

Then, it's been used for literally thousands of hours of play.... and a lot of the time has been running for most of the day without a break... either because of watching DVDs or playing games.

It's been shunted here, there and everywhere across a number of different house moves - and for years has been kept in really quite dire living conditions which no human or PS2 should ever have to endure, because of slumlords I used to have.

It's been used as a table for putting all manner of things on, because of having a flat top - the gamecube sat on it, the PSOne did for a while, it's always got bumph on it, of some sort... like at the moment it has random stuff like the Wii power unit and controllers sat on top of it...

And the thing has been an absolute trooper, through it all.

The one concession which I've made was to never use the vertical stand thing which it came with - because the PS2 is ironically not designed to be used with those (even though the vertical stand is official Sony PS2 equipment), and as such the DVD drive is notorious for burning out when used vertically rather than horizontally.

Yeah, I never had mine standing vertically; the things were enough of a problem without that bit added to it.

Most of them were the Slimline models; those things in particular just..... ugh. I remember working at Gamestop when those released, they had a really amazing rate of being returned due to frying themselves really fast. Most of them for me died to the dreaded DRE, as did the fatty models, though one in particular had a minor fall of exactly one foot onto the floor, where it DIED INSTANTLY. Cheap things, really.

Most people I know that have had one for years that just lasts all seem to have the much older, earlier models.... it seems that those old ones just last forever, whereas later models really..... dont. Even when modded the early models seem to just be able to handle anything.

I wouldnt have put up with going through 10 of them except for the fact that I had a number of import games for them (used a simple loader disc to make them work, pretty easy actually). That was with my later ones though, not the first 5 or so. Eventually though, I just gave up. The 360 then ended up being the place to get the imports I was after (shmups, all of them) so that worked out at least. THAT thing hasnt died or failed even once, amazingly. Even despite the time the TV fell on it.

I think that's an excellent point.

Mine is one of the very first models which were made (it was in the second wave of production for the original fat-arse model of PS2) , and now that you mention it I'm pretty sure that I accidentally dropped it a couple of feet down onto the floor as well... and it never even cared.

I'm glad to hear that your Xbox 360 has been doing well.
