I've tried playing MMO's, but it always gets to the point that in order to get the high level items you have to join up in groups to dungeons, or raids. I don't know how many groups I've been kicked out of for doing something I wasn't aware of, and nobody had warned me about. When I try to join up with guilds, I start running into scheduling stuff, mostly they want to do runs while I want to do something else.

The nice thing about most MMO's is that they are open ended and go on for a long time. Single player games tend to always come to an end and time to get a new game.

If you want to play an MMO, but don't want to be forced into teams against your will just to complete core content, I would like to recommend two from Cryptic Games/PWE: Champions Online and Star Trek Online.

In Champions Online (CO), you play a superhero, starting in Millennium City, MI (it used to be called Detroit, until Dr. Destroyer leveled most of it in 1992 while fighting the most powerful heroes on Earth). You start off fighting an alien invasion in the tutorial section; you then move on to street gangs in Westside, until you defeat the Death Dragon summoned by the Clan of the Red Banner. After that, you can go to crises in northern Canada or Burning Sands, NM (used to be White Sands, before Project Sunburst reduced it to a radioactive wasteland). Later venues include Monster Island, the undersea kingdom of Lemuria, and the city of Vibora Bay, FL (where you start off by averting the Biblical Apocalypse - a fallen angel consigned there is tired of waiting for Armageddon, and wants to kickstart it himself).

Star Trek Online (STO) starts off forty years after the events shown in the beginning of the 2009 Star Trek movie. Romulus was wiped out by a supernova that should never have even affected the world, much less hit it in a span of hours, and yes, the scientists are confused by how such a thing could possibly happen. (If you play Federation or Romulan, you get a series of missions in which you look into what really happened at Hobus.) Species 8472, the Undine, are attacking the Alpha Quadrant; suspicion about who might be a shapeshifting telepathic enemy has caused the Klingon Empire to abandon the Khitomer Accords, and a state of war exists between Empire and Federation as the story opens. (The Fed player gets to help bring this to an end, by stopping the plans of Ambassador B'vat, who wants a state of constant war so the Empire doesn't turn in upon itself.) Meanwhile, a faction of Romulans wants to form a Republic, and separate from the remnants of the old Star Empire (which is mostly owned by the Tal'Shiar, the secret police). You start off taking command of a low-level starship under stressful circumstances, and work your way up through the ranks, getting a free ship every ten levels.

I've leveled characters all the way to the level cap (40 in CO, 50 in STO) without ever being forced to team. (If you want to level faster in CO, you can do Grab Alerts once you've reached level 10, but I've always preferred the journey to the destination.) Neither game requires you to spend any money; I've dropped a fair bit of coin in CO over the years, buying new costumes, Archetypes (the preselected power trees used by free, or Silver, players - Gold players get Freeforms, and select the powers they want as they level up), and character slots. Haven't dropped a penny in STO, though, and I've gotten multiple characters all the way to 50 in all three factions. It helps that every so often they give away a free ship; last summer, for instance, I claimed the Nebula Refit Science Cruiser, which is the preferred vessel of Adm. Jonathan Sills (USS Messier) and Adm. Grunt (USS Ferenginar, although right now I have Grunt in the Obelisk Carrier USS Leviathan to see if that makes the Borg endgame content any easier).

In both games, you can play all the way to level cap and endgame without even necessarily having to talk to another player (although sometimes I join in on things like the Grond jokes in CO). There are a few lairs in CO that can only be completed by a group, most notably Therakiel's Lair (because there's a puzzle that involves holding four mirrors at a certain angle while a fifth player aims the light source), but they aren't core content - they don't really advance the story, and can be completely ignored without really missing anything.

Oh, and if you see Spider-Bat or Broken Arrow tooling around Millennium City, nod in passing... :)

It's not the "interacting with other players", I just don't care for MMOs. Too much grinding, too much "flea market sim", and I've never liked the idea of paying a monthly fee.

I play online multiplayer sometimes, but I prefer to play with people I know, especially if we're in the same room.

In Runescape there is very little that you need other people for. I'd be richer if I joined groups to do the high level bosses (assuming I could do them even in a group which I can't) but I make money doing other stuff.

If I started a mmorpg and found out I'd have to do group stuff all the time I'd quit.

Now that i read some of this, I am learning that none of you would enjoy Tera Online and APB Reloaded...

Tera online is really community based and some of the best ways to level up is killing things called "BAMs" (Big Ass Monsters) that require team efforts... Not to mention, they have dedicated servers for Role Playing.

APB Reloaded is an over the shoulder shooter that you can pretty much go from rank 1 to rank 255 (that's right... 255 Levels...) by playing solo, problem is, if you join clans, you'll get a better experience in most cases. Less harassment from allies, oh, and you won't be matched up with strangers on your team... yeh... they try to match you into teams as much as possible...

You might like Warframe though, Space Ninjas, a community that you may never have to communicate with. EVER. and did i mention space ninjas?

Now, i know i've probably already suggested these and talked about them, but i thought i'd clarify these three a little better :L Also note, these are ALL "Free to Play" and only require "Micro" (hahaha) Transactions if you want to skip ahead and waste a ton of money...

Don't know if it qualifies as an MMO in the traditional sense, but War Thunder is pretty much all I play these days. But its more of an MMO combat flight simulator than a role playing game.

This.

There's several that I'd like to play but I don't want to play with random online people.

I'd like to play The Secret World, Defiance, Wasteland 2 (when they get out of beta), and maybe Destiny. I'm thinking about trying out Fallen Earth too.

^.^ i'd like to say, "The Secret World" isn't as good as it's hyped to be and Fallen Earth gets boring very fast ^.^ Defiance looked interesting but it seems like it may die out sooner than most games of the genre and I need to check out Wasteland 2 O.o

Hope this gets you thinking. and what do i know, you may enjoy the games that i said were bad. ^.^ different tastes so to speak.

Well that kind of was my fear with The Secret World, because it has been out for a little bit now and I haven't heard much on it. It seemed a bit too good to be true. But the Steam reviews on it are all pretty good. I just felt like there would have been more chatter over the game.
I also felt the same way about Defiance. I was watching the show before the game even game out and the show was good for the first 4-6 episodes to me and then I wasn't interested anymore. I didn't get the game because I didn't hear a single thing about it nor did I know of anyone that has played it, so that made me really hesitate with getting it.

I've also heard that about Fallen Earth, but I figured it was that way because it was free. I'm not really expecting a whole lot from it to be honest, plus some people have gotten frustrated with certain issues with the programming of the game.

Wasteland 2 is my biggest hopeful but there are still some negative reviews on it mainly because of it being in beta still. So I'm just trying to wait patiently until it gets out of beta, because Lord knows I am not going to spend 40-50 bucks on a game that is in a raw true beta form.

Another game I'm waiting for is Banished. I'm not sure if it's an MMO game or if it even has any online features, but I think it'd be pretty cool if it did.
Wasteland 2 and Banished would probably be my top 2 MMO games (if Banished is MMO, and I'm really hoping it is, but I somehow kind of doubt it is)

I forgot to add the other two games I'm waiting for is The Age of Decadence and Life is Feudal. Life is Feudal is a MMORPG Medieval era type game still in development stages, (not even beta) but there's a forum currently up for people wanting to form clans or whatever.
Age of Decadence is in an early access stage on Steam.

I wish I could have gotten into the Kickstarter for that one, but I didn't have a job at the time =( I've only been waiting for the game for about 15 years now >_<

The Age of Decadence looks rather like a sort of Age of Empires style control system >..>

Life Is Feudal actually looks rather promising considering its alpha stage images.

I suggest you check out "Black Desert", "Dragons Prophet" and (be fair now) "Tera Online" (Only got to mention that last one cause it's combat is frigging awesome enough to be mentioned in more than 2 posts in the same thread xD )

Black Desert has a VERY Promising Graphics engine AND a "The Sims" style housing system where EVERY BUILDING IN EVERY CITY IS BUYABLE! You can even open up your own shops (i think... may have miss heard that one...)

Dragons Prophet is a game where you tame dragons, have a semi-realtime combat system and most importantly DRAGONS!

I've been playing Tera Online lately, and I've been enjoying it a lot! I tend to stick to one of the PVP servers, although I do have characters on all of the rest of the servers? They're not as high-leveled, however. Generally speaking, I tend to do questing on my own, although I'll team up with some of my close friends (many of whom I've also gotten into the game) for taking down dungeons and BAMs that I can't handle on my own.

It's actually the first MMO I've played, although now I'm thinking of branching out a little? I got accepted into the ESO beta testing not very long ago, but the menu glitched, and I'd already waited an hour to log on in the first place, so I never really progressed past. Well. The first room. When the server opens back up, however, I'll try playing it again, to see how well I like it.

On Tera, I've only teamed up with strangers a handful of time, seeing as I'm pretty uncomfortable working with other people unless I know them well, unless it's for a few minutes of time. I have posted in the chat a few times, though, seeing as the discussions on the server I get on tend to get a little interesting during the later nighttime hours, when boredom strikes the masses that still linger, even though they really should be asleep already. And by "a little interesting" I mean it's this amalgamation of people being crude and blatantly sexual, which gets pretty hilarious when people take it too far. (I won't get into details, though, since it's probably not appropriate to discuss on this forum. Uh. Yeah.)

yeah... the game has a lot of creepy people on it... a lot of ellins as well... some would say too many... I would say too many...

xP anyway, If you ever play on the "Zenobia" Server, add me ^.^ (this is to anyone who plays tera) I'm a priest named "Repent". I'm only level 38 after finding out that there is a limit to how far you can solo the game as a priest >..> lol I also have a Slayer and an archer... i don't play them as often... the slayer is "Nomiya" and the archer is... i don't actually remember... O.o i don't play the game nearly enough apparently...

All 3, where's the option for that? :(

FallingDownMan wrote:

That highly depends on the MMO.

Runescape, as mentioned before, can get you pretty far without needing anyone. Sorry, my memory is hazy about this one, played it ages ago. That Halloween Mask must be worth a lot by now :P

Tales of Pirates requires you to have a party and have a guild throughout almost all of it.

Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 and 2 can both be done without needing a party.

World of Warcraft requires you to have a party when raiding dungeons(haven't played this one much)

Guildwars can get you through the entire story line with all 3 expansions without ever needing human players, you can just hire the AI henchmen, they are actually quite decent.

Guildwars 2 only requires you to be in a party at the very last storyline quest (IIRC?). You can do stuff beyond the story line but in most cases you'll need a party for that. NOPE NO HENCHMEN.

You can play all the dungeons and raids in WoW solo, the only problem is you have to overlevel them a fair bit, so the loot rewards won't be any use to you (unless they're bind on equip, and you have alts that can use them). In Mists of Pandaria they even added new trinkets available from rare mobs in the new areas, that would appear to be specifically designed to allow soloing of older raids, by giving you extra abilities you might need for certain bosses (eg. Terracotta Fragment gives you a 10 minute companion to tank for you on Razorgore, and Crate of Kidnapped Puppies will do enough melee hits to help you kill Viscidus).

And then if you have a ton of money to throw at the game, there's always multiboxing, which gets around the problem of loot being no use.
