I never heard of the existence of this prejudice before? Around here, grown up people that still play much video games, are in general seen as a bit inmature or geeky, but it does not really make a difference if you play Zelda or Call of Duty. ^^
Same thing here. I still play a big variation of video games and so do my friends(age range 24 - 30). Nobody seems to be bothered by it.

I'm active in a few gaming communities, including one of a FPS. I know plenty of people there that play Pokemon, Mario and the like. I don't think I've ever heard anyone there say that E rated games are for children.

@OP: Where did you hear this?

My response to people saying you don't need to be playing E-rated games: "What I find fun is what I find fun. Deal with it."

One of the joys of being an adult is that I use my own damn money to buy what I damn what and if want to buy Halo so be it and if I want to play Lego Lord of the Rings I will get that too.

In my experience, all video games are tarred with the same brush of "childishness". Children play "M-rated" games and adults play Super Mario... My friend and her young children came to visit. I figured I would give her some recreation time by putting on some games for the kids. The little boy hated all my E-rated stuff; he wanted to know why I turned off "Spec Ops: The Line" when they appeared on the scene...He had no time for Okami and became visibly angry when I tried to get him to play Megaman.

this...most of those "grow up fast" type kids think they are "too cool for GTA" by like...age 11 lol.

It's mostly a kiddy phenomenon to want to grow up fast..especially in the area of video games. Adults who are insecure ...show off cars, money, muscles (i do this one), "bling" etc.

I still enjoy playing Super Mario, Mario Kart, Tetris, Wii games, and Pokémon. ESPECIALLY Pokémon. I take it that "idea" of not playing non-violent games extends to Madden, NBA, and MLB games too, right?

Gosh, I'm having a hard time thinking of a game that isn't violent, by definition.

Mario kills enemies by crushing them with his body weight and throwing fireballs...
Pokemon is all about battle and destroying your opponents.
Megaman kills everything on screen that comes his way.
Link slashes creatures with his sword.
Madden games are violent, because football is violent. People smash into each other, break bones etc.
The new wave of LEGO games has you smashing your enemies into pieces.

Marble madness is non-violent? ;)

I guess my point is that 'Violence' is a pretty broad term.

Some criteria for "violence": Stealth kills, blood, corpses, realistic firearms, exploding heads, flopping ragdolls gurgling out their last breath...

If you really want to stretch the term violence then no, Marble madness is violent. You kill other marbles and mini green... slugs? in it.

Dont forget the sex stuff. Some games, being rated +16 in europe are +18 in the US and otherwise, because of the europeans having more issues about vioance, while the US seem to have more issues about the existence of the female gender and boobs. As far as I know the Witcher 1 got rated, because of some mini-cutscenes with the witcher engaging with some woman. Beware the terror of the "pink marbles".

lol, the Black Marbles!
I had forgotten about those....

Anyways, for myself, gameplay trumps all.
Whether a game is cutesy, or realistically violent, or non-violent at all with an E Rating, I'll play it if it has great gameplay.

That's my main criteria. ;)

This. I remember earlier on, I was playing The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and right after I got the flippers I got into the water and caught myself firing an arrow straight at a zora's head, then I realized "wait a second, they gave me a set of flippers for helping them out, and now I'm KILLING one of them?" :P I thought that was kind of funny when it happened. Of course, going by "Nintendo logic", I probably wasn't "killing" the zora, but rather "removing" it from the game. Still seems kind of violent shooting an arrow at a living creature though, but to be fair I only shot that arrow because he shot at me first. ;)

The notion that adults will only play so-called "mature" games is ludicrous. I'm 33 years old, and one of the last games I finished was "New Super Mario Bros. Wii", a few months ago. I currently have a Super NES, N64, Genesis, and Wii, plus 3 NES systems that I'm in the process of repairing.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that most "hardcore" gamers didn't start playing videogames until CoD or whatever, and never grew up with Japanese console games. They look at them, and say "that's like a baby's toy".

Interestingly, the only violent games I play are things like the Arkham series, Fallout, and Red Dead Redemption...

Realistically violent games don't appeal to me. I tried to play the latest Splinter Cell game since I got it free when I upgraded my vidcard, but I just couldn't do it. There's something fundamentally wrong with sneaking around and shooting people in the head with a silenced pistol... :?

Right now, I'm spending all my game time with TapTiles and Asphalt 8... Those games are not violent at all unless you count car wrecks.
