Is it strange that I don't really care for Minecraft?

Not even ONE game breaks out of this.... ever.

Didn't read past this. I just told you that I was talking about Minecraft and my experience of freestyle play's appeal. There's no subtext. No secret to be unlocked in my words.

Didnt read it, then you have NO room to comment.

Ye gods, I hate it when people give answers like that in response to a post without bloody reading the damn thing. If you dont wanna read the damn thing, or if you dont wanna continue the conversation just bloody well say "I dont feel like reading all of that, it's too long" or something. Not "I didnt read that, but I'm awesomely psychic and I know that whatever you said in there is dumb. I read a whole paragraph out of 20 and therefore I can know this!"

"Your experience" is one thing, and that's super duper, but I merely gave some counter-points to elucidate on WHY the "freedom" idea within the game is such a big deal to many. It aint the bloody Holodeck, but it still does pretty darn well at this. That being said, the post isnt just directed at you (as I've heard this very idea brought up MANY times now in reference to this game); it explains a bit further into the ideas behind the game, so it also fits the topic and goes along with my earlier explanations. That and the concept and execution of "freedom" within gaming is something that interests me, so I went into it at length in my usual irritable manner. I have a tendancy to do this with any topic that genuinely holds my interest.

I've also heard that the FOV angle being too tight / wide can cause motion sickness. Can this be adjusted in PC Minecraft? I would hope so.

The few times I actually played Minecraft, I would usually turn the FOV all the way up, as I'm simply not used to first-person perspective games with low FOVs. I started using high FOVs ever since I learned that it was one of the main settings skilled Quake players would change, and I discovered that by playing Quake III with an increased FOV, I performed somewhat better than I did with the default FOV. Whenever it's an option in a game I'm playing, I change it.

One thing you might try is to turn off the "view bobbing" in the options. Wether or not that'll help, I dont know. Not familiar with this issue, though I know there are plenty of gamers out there who get it with some games. It sounds.... really, REALLY annoying.

For me the majority of games with a first person view make me ill. It bothers me when the camera moves direction to point the way my character moves. I do better with a fixed camera angle from above that never changes unless I change it. I also feel ill when watching videos that are shaky and I've gotten carsick a lot in my life. I've been a little better about getting carsick lately but I can still never read or play video games in a car. I briefly tried to hatch some Pokemon eggs in a car ride recently because I wouldn't have to look much and felt sick right away and felt sick the rest of the car ride.

A couple of examples of games that made me feel ill are Legacy of Cain:Soul Reaver for the PS1 and Hometown Story for the 3DS (I usually keep 3d off to make the battery last longer so it's not that). A couple that I play that never make me sick are Runescape and Pokemon.

Ugh, well, that really rather sucks, then.

Is there nothing that can be done about it? I've heard of anti-motionsickness medicines, but..... wether they're effective or not is another matter. Nothing I'd really know much about. The only problem I ever have is when going downhill really fast, usually in a car. I get real tensed up, which isnt pleasant. Can also get something like a mild vertigo if gaming, and I have to jump offa something and fall some long distance in first-person, which I do in Minecraft sometimes out of sheer impatience. Gives me a bit of a headache.

But that of course is nothing compared to full motion-sickness.

As Pobbles said though, it might be worth a quick try to see if changing the POV option has any beneficial effect on it. I think many such games have this kind of option.

I tried it for a bit. It made me sick. I kind of expected that since the Minecraft videos I watch yesterday made e a little sick after a while. Changing pov wasn't helpful for me because I need a fixed camera angle to play games. It doesn't have that. Toughing it out wouldn't help because the longer I play the worse I feel. Taking medication just wouldn't be practical if it even worked. I'd be having to take it all the time.

I didn't even use up all of my demo time and my character is now lost underground somewhere.

I guess I'll just stick to Runescape and Sims 3. At least those don't make me sick.

Despite it making me feel ill I'm going to keep playing it and have been tweaking the graphics options to make it less bad.

If you have motion sickness or issues with low Field-of-View, set the FOV slider to at least 90, or 100 (if it goes that high) on whatever game you're playing.

That's if the game even has that option. Recent PC games tend to have a FOV slider in the options, but not always. (Especially not if its a port from console, they often overlook this.)

(The new Thief game has the option, and so does Borderlands 2, off the top of my head. In fact Thief has one of the most incredible options menus I've ever seen in a game. The Devs really outdid themselves.)

but, back to motion sickness:

Generally the FOV on console games is lower than 90, and there's no slider to adjust it, so you're stuck with what you get on console. However this is not so much of an issue when you're sitting far back from your TV set.

For PC, however, the increased field of view (90 or 100 is best) is needed since you're sitting so close to the screen, generally. The higher FOV helps prevent the issue.

TL:DR
Basically, check the options in your games and see if there's a FOV slider, set it to about 100 and see if that helps you. :)

OP: Have you heard of Starbound? It's like Terraria IN SPACE, and in early development. Most of the gameplay isn't there yet.

I like the metroidvania and progression aspects in these kinds of games too. Metroidvania and Castlevania are some of my favorites. Minecraft has enough things to explore, I just couldn't really get into it too.

Some of my friends play Starbound. It looks kind of interesting, though I haven't bothered to buy it yet because I don't currently have any way of buying things online, and I'm waiting for it to be polished up a bit.

You punch the trees to get the wood, you get the wood to build a cabin. Minecraft, it don't got no winner. It don't got no objective. Ya just buildin s**t.

How simple is that?

I can understand why some people might not like it. It has no real goals other than those you set yourself and no end.

At this point I'm still in the honeymoon phase with this game. I play it all day, every day. I don't know how long it will last.
