PC gaming Aim
I played Doom multiplayer with a controller and came out third place, its actually not that bad for some modern FPS. Controllers are better then they were but yeah keyboard and mouse is preferred. I don't see why you would not play with someone based on their play preferences, yeah mouse and keyboard is better on a fundamental level but I am imagine there are some gamers that could beat you with a controller. Its all relative to what the player is used to. I think you can reach a higher level of accuracy with a mouse and keyboard but I think if you get a good gamer who is used to a controller, I think the accuracy between the two play styles begin to even out a bit.
This. KB+M is better on a fundamental level, but this doesn't mean it's what a person will necessarily do better with. The trackpoint on my Thinkpad is technically supposed to be less accurate than a touchpad, but after using it for a while I could almost never see myself going back to using a touchpad. Of course, very few laptops have had good touchpads in my experience.
If I were gaming on a normal laptop and I was offered the choice between a crappy touchpad and a controller, I'd almost definitely take the controller. With a decent touchpad, I'd probably use it for certain games, but still take the gamepad for others.
I may sound like a controller apologist, but I actually tend to prefer a keyboard and mouse for a lot of games. What annoys me is when people say "you can't play FPS with a controller!" or "you can't play sidescrollers with a keyboard!". Part of the beauty of PC gaming is the sheer amount of choice you get with your input methods, and people sometimes excel with unusual control methods.
Gah, I dunno. I feel like I can't win these petty arguments because I go against the grain of popular thought.

OP, just play around with different control methods and find what works best for you. What works for you might not work for other people, and what works for other people might not work for you, and that's OK. Everyone is different. And if I ever come across someone who can rock Quake 3 with a controller, I say they deserve a medal.

Actually the reason why controllers are at a genuine loss over keyboard/mouse when it comes to FPS games isnt just aim, it's speed.
With enough practice, you can get around the aim bit.
With enough practice, you.... cant do a goddamn thing to make the aim actually MOVE faster. But your kb/m opponent can do it not just dramatically faster (without losing accuracy overall, because they dont have to worry about a minimum movement speed), but without anything resembling effort. You need to spin around 180 degrees? The other guy could spin around 5 times in the time it takes you to do that on a controller. And then possibly still have time to shoot you.
All the aim in the world doesnt matter if you give your opponent a massive opening to aim at YOU whenever you try to rotate.

My mom is a mild gamer and I have tried to get her to play keyboard and mouse games dating back to Might and Magic Dark Messiah cause she was a Might and Magic fan and she sucks so bad I think she could do a controller easier. So yeah not knowing how to use a mouse in a game is a real world problem. I really wish my mom wold try Skyrim, I think she would like it since she was all into that late 1990s, early 2000s med evil fantasy theme if she could get over the mouse and keyboard thing. Its really the only thing holding her back from being a gamer which is actually funny to me considering I can't picture her getting heavily into the hobby. She plays a lot of games but they are in a different genre then what I like.
I think my mom got into gaming a lot back in the Dos days, since my dad worked in computers, we had a computer before most households and she told me she used my dads first PC for IRC and Dos games.
LOL my mom is a old school nerd
In fact she doesn't even use steam, she is happy with a few windows 95 titles and dosbox installed.
Install CS:GO, download Reflex training on the steam workshop and practice that for 10-20 minutes a day. Osu! and Audiosurf are good games for training hand coordination.
Stay away from modern FPS games and play a few old school FPS games, I highly recommend the first F.E.A.R game.

I'd almost say the Unreal Tournament games (particularly 2004) would be good to practice on, but you might find yourself trying to tap dodge in other games if you play them too much. :O I should know as this has happened to me before. It's like how Doom got me running diagonally to move faster, or how Quake 3 got me hammering the spacebar to bunnyhop.
