Perhaps it has something to do with where you live and how you treat your console?
I doubt it, not unless they're sending worse hardware to the US. I had two die on me, my third probably would have if I actually used it. (it gave occasional red lights, but would usually reboot correctly). Everyone I know with one is at least on their second. The last on a launch console thought everything was being overblown, but his died a month or two ago.
Hmm, apparently the newer ones aren't so faulty.
The disc-scratching and overheating issues are being or have been sorted.

360 is pretty solid and they've been getting the best third party support but they're not really doing anything new in terms of controls and gameplay...they're kinda like an expansion pack on last generation. the games look stunning and some of the games i'm most excited about are coming out on 360 but i wish those games were coming out on the wii instead. take bioshock, for example. i think with it being a fps and a smart gameplay overall, it'd be a great fit for the nintendo. unfortunately it seems one of the big focuses for the game is graphics and so they probably won't want to go wii but rather ps3 instead (which is a garbage system).
Thing is, what about the reliability issues with the 360? I heard that the X360 was the least reliable of the lot.
you're talking to someone who's done video game testing.....the 360 is much more reliable than the ps3.
I find that *VERY* difficult to believe unless you aren't dealing with stock 360s, like dev units or whatever. Even Microsoft admitted there was a problem (except of course it seems to be ongoing).

And no reliability issues yet even though i DO hate the huge power thing and the noise.
Is battlestations midway to do with naval combat?

Of course I'd like to play it!
I love WW2 games and ships.

could be that most of them are dev kits....but i still didn't hear any such story from friends about the system scratching discs.
does it only happen if you have the 360 upright instead of longways? i'd imagine that the disc is much more balanced where the disk is parallel to the earth rather than perpendicular.
The disc scratching thing seems to happen in either position. Microsoft claimed it was from people shifting their console while it was in use-and I'm sure that accounts for some-maybe most-of it, but lots of people have gotten scratched discs without moving it. I've seen it first hand, though none of mine did it. The original X-Box did it too, but not to the extent the 360 does.
The general failure rate seems to be worse than the disc wrecking problem though.

Apparently that applies mostly to the older consoles... but I may be wrong.

from what i've been able to find, it seems that both were more first generation console problems....which...well...is why you shouldn't buy a first generation console.

Yes, good thing I waited for a while.

I suppose it depends on what you want to get out of your gaming.
If you care more about graphics than anything else, then go for the PS3. Best graphics out of any console, but the games are the same stuff we've been playing ever since the Playstation came out (if you don't believe me, try comparing the latest Gran Turismo to the very first one on Playstation).
XBox 360 looks like it could be the market leader, having launched it's console first (personally, I think that the only reason that the PS2 won the last console war is because it launched fisrt). Of course, there's still the online play and everything, but again, the games are the same stuff we've been playing for years. Each FIFA is basically the same game as the last one, just with a roster update. Pro Evo may be a better game but still it is the same game for years. Doesn't anybody want to have fun in their games? I get the feeling that the industry has forgotten that.
Now on to Wii, the name may be rubbish but the games are definately more fun. Take WarioWare: Smooth Moves. That is one of the most fun games around at the moment, even though it's the same game that appeared on the GBA four years ago. However, participating in the action makes it more fun. Also, the Wii has free online play, although there is only one game out where I come from that uses the online play (Mario Strikers Charged Football, known as Mario Strikers Charged in the US). Virtual Console gives Wii the biggest backwards compatibility and eventually third parties will stop seeing it as a gimmick and start making decent games, something that EA has already realised.
So, as you can probably tell, my money is on the Wii (aka Revolution if you don't like the name)

Personally, the only next-gen console I own is the 360, and it's served me very well. I've had it for a year now, had no troubles with it, and bought plenty of great games. As far as I'm concerned, it has a better library than the PS3 and Wii and better upcoming games. Compare that to the PS3, which costs so much more, mostly has 360 ports which (apparently) look worse on the PS3, and doesn't have much coming out in the immediate future. I reckon it'll be worth buying in another couple of years when more games come out, but right now it's useless. I don't think I can really compare them to the Wii, since it's more of a budget console than anything, but it also doesn't have many games yet.

I *completely* disagree with you. You're naming sports games on the PS3 and 360. Yeah, of course they're the same. They keep pumping out those every year. But you're ignoring all the games that have/will come out that aren't possible on lower end hardware.
Then you say the same thing about the Wii...but then excuse it? The "definitely more fun" thing is totally subjective. While the Wii has maybe 1-3 games I'd like to play (only one that I'd actually buy for full price), overall it's library is characterized so far with mini game collections, with tons more announced. I have no interest in those at all, so they definitely aren't fun to me.
I would have been MUCH happier had they released a next generation system, ie a Gamecube 2, that had more refined controls. That way I'd get to see what Nintendo could do with more power. For what I'm interested in, the Wii can't really do anything the Gamecube couldn't do. The Gamecube was awesome hardware in 2001 for $200...but in 2007 for $250? Er...
The Virtual Console WOULD be awesome, but it's DRM ties the games you "buy" to a single console, making them really just a rental. (That's true of all three consoles, though most disappointing in the case of the VC, since personally it's got the most games I want to play.)
