They've just confirmed the prank:

Quote:
EDITOR'S NOTE: April 2, 2008 - 12:01 a.m. PST. Yup, you guessed it. The Legend of Zelda trailer featured above is part of an elaborate April Fool's Day prank. Check back in later today for more details on the IGN/Rainfall Films collaboration that resulted in this "love it or hate it" piece of videogame movie history.

Many cliches were in it too, like the whole "one word scenes". Why didn't they show the godesses of the Triforce?

I absolutely hate april fools day... this is worse than that prank Mugglenet.com pulled four years ago on all it's Harry Potter fan club members...

But still, parts of this trailer looked awesome. Maybe some desperate director will have an empty inspiration poll and will happen across this trailer and think "This is a good idea." You never know.

If they made a Zelda movie, they should cast Orlando Bloom as Link; he'd be perfect.

Actually, I think that'd be a bit cliched. But his PotC costar Keira Knightley may be a good Zelda. I think that the casting of Link and Zelda would work best with young unknowns. After all, that's how George Lucas managed to cast Star Wars: A New Hope (I was watching a documentary on DVD) for Luke and Leia.

For Ganondorf, I would be a little more open to suggestions.

Kevin Spacey, it'd be perfect.

Not convinced. For Ganondorf, you'd need someone physically powerful, as well as having a powerful performance. A couple of decades ago, I may have thought of David Prowse. Now, I can't think of anyone offhand with that sort of thing.

My brother and I were talking a little while ago about how there should be a Zelda movie. I'm sure it will get made someday.

That trailor looked expensive and time consuming. I don't think zelda would work as a movie. Lot's of games could have worked as movies, but look how most of those turned out. Zelda just wouldn't work. You look forward to all the cliches in even the most modern version, even Link being apparently silent most of the time. The music is the same, the motifs of the story, items, characters...ect. See it all works for the games, but a movie would be predictable and dumb.

Of course it was a joke, but it was fun nonetheless. Reminds me of fan movies for superhero comics that are shot like trailers.

Teehee, are you refering to LeakyMug? XD

I love April Fool's day. I always know that everyone's going to pull some hilarious little prank, and some--such as this trailer and the Blizzard's annual ones--are very elaborate.

I think I read about it somewhere on the WP forums, but it's been so long the thread has most likely been buried by now. There is a small group of people actually working to produce a Zelda movie, however it's very low budget and parts of it look pretty ridiculous.

Apparently it's an ongoing project despite the lack of updated information on the website. The forums seem to have a little bit of information.

If only the people who made the joke could connect with the people making a real movie to produce something truly spectacular.

I think that any plot should be about finding Zelda, then the Triforce, then finally taking Ganon and his cronies out. Personally, if Zelda is missing at the start and hiding from Ganondorf and his minions, I think that the best alter-ego would be an older form of Tetra.

I also think that, if the power of the Triforce of Power corrupted Ganondorf, why doesn't the other Triforce segments exert some sort of toll due to their use? The corrupting effects of power was very much an undertone in Twilight Princess.

I also think that Ganondorf should have Aganhim and the Twinrova sisters helping him.

You know, as cool as a Zelda movie would be - I think it'd have a lot of issues.

It MIGHT work as an anime - a live person dressed as link looks kinda foolish. North American film makes handling it, though, would make me unbelievably nervous.

It's because the majority of the games involve Link being alone in a dungeon for so long. I mean, movies are generally about the interactions and emotions and relationships of characters. If you really analyze the Zelda games, there is only one character.

Sure, you could make a movie where link solves puzzles, but it would be so incredibly hard to pull off well and would be done so much better as a video game than as a movie.

tldr; what makes zelda games good is not the story.

actually it wouldn't be that hard. make the puzzles solved in such a way to where it seems like an ocean's eleven style solution. and i think the later games did a good job of establishing other characters. it's just that it resets with pretty much every new game.
