SOSE is like Command and conquer , it's an RTS where victory based on speed and not on real strategy and tactics.

The only strategy is: BUILD BUID BUILD ----> MOVE MOVE MOVE ----->ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK

the faster wins.

SOSE is a good game indeed but I still prefer Homeworld 1/2 and SW:Empire at War (for their stories and gameplay as well strategy), I loved also Galactic civilizations for its customizable ships and for its open-ended strategies.

I will concede the point about tactics (there's no "this counters that" system in SSE), but there is definitely strategy involved. Any game that involves "lanes" that connect multiple theaters together inevitably has chokepoints, where controlling them can heavily restrict movement for your opponents. You can also get flanked bigtime if you allow yourself to (I've had that happen in SSE when I was still learning)

If you want a good tactics game, however, I would definitely recommend the LOTR battle for middle earth series. The engine is somewhat based on C&C (more so for the second installment), but overall it's a good solid game that doesn't require a great deal of system resources to play... Plus, being able to shoot fireballs with Saruman is fun...

Tried it but didnt like it. Its a homeworld meets Master of Orion type of game but sadly it mirrors more Master of Orion 3 than the original Master of Orion..that means it has a horrible management issue.

Unbelievable game engine though. thousands and thousands of ships.. wow.

Management was much easier than moo3 if you ask me... not nearly as much micromanaging involved (both ships and colony worlds didn't have as many variables to keep track of, like pollution on planets or ship supplies and stuff like that...) Also, the fact that you didn't strictly have to organize your ships into fleets just so they would be able to fight was a less savory artifact of moo3 that was left out of SSE...
