I like the Wii, but it's f*****g expensive here in Norway compared to the PS3 and the Xbox 360.

The " casual " gaming approach that Nintendo has spearheaded has not only led to the company promoting shallow games, but it's also created a demonization of other games by giving them the " hardcore " label. Many of my favorite series ( Final Fantasy, Castlevania, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, Devil May Cry, etc. ), fall into the category of something that only those who have been gamers their entire lives can appreciate. Apparently having the patience to learn a game with controls more complex than shaking a remote from side to side, no matter how fun the game turns out to be, is now taboo in many circles.

If games can be considered art, the " casual/hardcore " dichotomy is like demonizing Kurt Vonnegut in favor of Dan Brown.

i actually see that dichotomy used more to demonize the wii and say it's not a real gaming platform than the other way around.

i just wish they'd come up with some good third party games but they're all too lazy to develop anything good other than sudo 51.

Depends on which source of journalism we're talking about. Dedicated gaming magazines and websites may favor hardcore games, even on the Wii ( the games they most publicize for the system are those of classic franchises; Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, etc. ). While magazines like EGM or sites like IGN don't go so far as to say that the Wii isn't a " real " gaming platform, they generally don't give the more " casual " games good reviews ( see: universally mediocre-to-negative critical response to Wii Play, despite its great sales ).

Mainstream journalism not tied to the hobby, on the other hand, definitely favors the Wii. Articles I've read about the Wii in magazines like Time and Newsweek tended to talk about it like it's a huge revolution in accessibility, showing clear disdain for the conventional video game controller design and its complexity in favor of the simplified Wii remote. In the meantime, the target audience for the " hardcore " games is referred to in rather dubious terms, sometimes invoking stereotypes of young adult male gamers. And since Newsweek reaches many more people than EGM, this privileging of the term " casual games " is more common throughout the world.

Note that I'm not counting forum console debates, because those generally descend into immature flame wars that don't really further any discussion. But it's clear that Wii's public reputation has exceeded that of its competitiors; I'm still not convinced this is a good thing.

On that we can agree. When seeing the racks of third party games for the Wii, and how universally terrible most of them are , it seems like " casual gaming " is too often synonymous for " Spongebob games for kids that don't know any better ". It's quite a shame; the DS ( another system that I eventually sold, this time in favor of a PSP )
has many similar problems.

Well the PS2 had the same problem, whichever console sells the most is going to get the shovelware, everyone trying to make a quick buck off the largest userbase, but that doesn't mean their aren't any good games on it. Especially with the DS which while having shelves full of crappy games, also has a ton of fantastic ones.

I love my Wii. I'm kind of what you consider a hardcore gamer and I would never trade anything for my PS3 or 360, but I found the Wii's unique play style refreshingly different.

Besides Wii games make the best party games :D Super Smash Bros. and Mario Party is a blast with friends!

Also I disagree that the Wii has poor quality games. I find a lot of PS and 360 games take a few hours to finish and have nearly no replay value (most action and FPS titles). (There are exceptions like Mass Effect). Mario Galaxy and Zelda have tonnes of replay value, but it's true that it's mostly the Nintendo titles that are good.

well i just got a wii for my birthday, i find the sports kind of boring, but this weekend i'll have the zelda game. theres only couple games i would even think of buying and there games that i know i wouldn't beat in less then a day. zelda, okami, resident evil, just to name a few. i'm getting tired of the action, shoot to kill kind of games, more into simulation and adventure games like zelda.

The game it came with using the wiimote, the sports game, was repulsive. Not even slightly fun to me. I only got my wii for smash bros brawl, and it was well worth it.

I tried a wii for the first time the other day. It didn't seem that special.

I like my Wii as part of a selection of systems. If you're only going to buy one, I'd say pick an Xbox 360, but if you have the budget, a Wii can be a lot of fun. It just takes a different mindset, you can't think of it as just another console. I do agree though, a lot of crappy games have been getting dumped on it lately.

Nintendo will forever fail at gaming for it's absurd hard-on in catering to the age group of 9-13 years of age.

Sickeningly bright colors, characters with no depth and the same old titles vomited out again and again.

JUST KILL MARIO ALREADY!

People are still playing Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. no?

And please, if you will, name me one good Nintendo RPG.

Zelda does not count, Link was an effing mute.

earthbound was one of the best and most original rpg's made.

and why does rpg define a system or a publisher? there's much more to gaming than just some genre which has become so dilluted that i sometimes can barely tell the difference between today's "rpg" and final fight...just the rpg has a sh***y melodramatic angsty storyline and final fight cuts the BS.

RPG's don't define a console, but seriously, come on. Nintendo was cool back when I was afraid to kiss girls; they just never evolved and kept spewing out the same old kiddy BS. In my opinion, the Wii(what a fitting name...) was an act of desperation in result to their lack of creativity. Can't come up with anything interesting? Well s**t, we can still cater to the ADHDs. OMG LOOK MOM, I'M JUST LIKE LINK! *Swings lame ass controller around*

I'm sorry, but through and through, FF is the greatest series of games to date. It was a pipe-dream that sprouted into a legacy. It has the best of everything: Graphics, plot, characters, music - you name it. You sound a little angsty yourself, rather "non-conformist." Don't take it out on such a pinnacle of creation.

Personally I've had a blast with mine with Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Eventually I will get around to getting Metroid Prime 3, and Mario Kart Wii comes out later this month. The Wii has the same problem as the Gamecube and N64, the third party games mostly suck.

I own my Wii for Nintendo Games, and my 360 for Everything else.

I agree, the only good Wii games are made by Nintendo, It's the same with the DS...

I own my Wii for the same reasons, My friend has an Xbox 360, which we play every now and again. I also have a PS2 but we never buy any new games, we only stick with the ones we have: Star Wars Battlefront 1/2, Ratchet and Clank Gladiator ect. ect.

The wii was a failure for one reason: It did not have a controller.

And don't call that white piece of crap a controller, since it is not...

At least they had the common decency to allow some games to have backwards compatibility with the gamecube controller...

As for me, I'm sticking with real gaming... Mass effect comes out for a real system in May, and spore is finally coming out in september...
