i actually see that dichotomy used more to demonize the wii and say it's not a real gaming platform than the other way around.
Depends on which source of journalism we're talking about. Dedicated gaming magazines and websites may favor hardcore games, even on the Wii ( the games they most publicize for the system are those of classic franchises; Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, etc. ). While magazines like EGM or sites like IGN don't go so far as to say that the Wii isn't a " real " gaming platform, they generally don't give the more " casual " games good reviews ( see: universally mediocre-to-negative critical response to Wii Play, despite its great sales ).
Mainstream journalism not tied to the hobby, on the other hand, definitely favors the Wii. Articles I've read about the Wii in magazines like Time and Newsweek tended to talk about it like it's a huge revolution in accessibility, showing clear disdain for the conventional video game controller design and its complexity in favor of the simplified Wii remote. In the meantime, the target audience for the " hardcore " games is referred to in rather dubious terms, sometimes invoking stereotypes of young adult male gamers. And since Newsweek reaches many more people than EGM, this privileging of the term " casual games " is more common throughout the world.
Note that I'm not counting forum console debates, because those generally descend into immature flame wars that don't really further any discussion. But it's clear that Wii's public reputation has exceeded that of its competitiors; I'm still not convinced this is a good thing.
>i just wish they'd come up with some good third party games but they're all too lazy to develop anything good other than sudo 51.
On that we can agree. When seeing the racks of third party games for the Wii, and how universally terrible most of them are , it seems like " casual gaming " is too often synonymous for " Spongebob games for kids that don't know any better ". It's quite a shame; the DS ( another system that I eventually sold, this time in favor of a PSP )
has many similar problems.
