I keep getting the theme for the C64 version of Bubble Bobble stuck in my head alot. I don't know if I would go so far as to say it is my favourite however...

Does Cave Story count as old-school? Considering that it was released in 2004.

Mario Brothers, but the song tends to get stuck in my head at odd moments if I think about it. I was taking my Metaphysics final last May and it popped in my head :o it was so distracting but funny at the same time as I was trying to write an essay on the pre socratics lol.

Earthbound and Chrono trigger have excellent music. I have to mention The Japan-only earthbound sequel (mother 3) for having perhaps the best music of any game although it is certainly not "old school".

Bubble Bobble (C64)
Hear it just once, and you won't be able to get it out of your head.

The Nes Castlevania's were a masterpiece for sound and the series still has great music today.

I loved the theme song to the Team USA Basketball game for the Sega Genesis. I also love the music from both worlds 1 and 2 from the Mick & Mack As The Global Gladiators game.

The entire soundtrack from Sonic 3 and Knuckles was absolutely incredible, especially considering how limited the Mega Drive's soundchip was. Gotta lov those gritty old FM synth sounds... so much character :D
The Donkey Kong Country series all had their share of fantastic music, too, especially DKC 2 and 3. Again, brilliant and evocative considering the technical limitations imposed upon the sound designers at the time.

My favorite soundtracks are from:

* Super Mario Bros.
* Sonic The Hendgehog
* Startropics
* Megaman 1-6
* Space Harrier
* Chrono Trigger
* Final Fantasy IV & VI

. . . and other games from NES and SNES.

Well nobody responded to my question before, so I guess I'll post this. Much as I enjoy the music of FFIV/FFVI, Chrono Trigger etc, I don't really consider them old school since those are still being released today as ports for portable handhelds.
