How about the obvious betrayal? You know, where you do some quests or help out that guy that a 2 year old could spot as the villain, only to by "shocked" by his betrayal/reveling himself as the villain? I most recently saw this one in Fable 2, a game I actually like for the most part, though it's a ludicrously common video game plot device.

The whole MMORPG leveling grind for gear system. About time we got back to UO sandbox make-your-own-fun style gaming IMO.

You got a problem with zombies? :x

Although to be fair it is a bit over-used. But then again, it's not like there was ever a huge range of stuff to base a video-game about, is there? Kill stuff, or race stuff. That's... more or less it, right?

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Likewise, people who still "play house" (The Sims) shouldn't insult war games.

Most of it was covered.

I do know one other overused concept, which is OK for the Mario and/or Zelda series (because they were pretty much the pioneers of modern gaming), but not for many others - WHY oh why does the guy always have to save the girl?! Can't a girl save a guy for once? Key games include, say, Kingdom Hearts. I love the series, but could they have a girl fighting? No, because it is partly DISNEY. That's probably why.

Ranting over. XP

EDIT: Well, I do live in a somewhat glassed house. I read shojo manga, so why exactly does my point make sense again...? I dunno.

No, because due to gender stereotypes, people would think that the guy was a "sissy" and therefore not worth saving.

well that shows how far the collective human consiousness has come.

most overused?
1. something goes screwy in the main character's hometown
2. main character leaves & finds out what's going on @ home is a spiral off of something w/ his whole country/world/thing
3. main must go around the world rescuing peoples who don't give a crap about him
4. main ends up fighting some insane final boss who wants to take over the world
5. main gets the frigging girl of his dreams that the Big Boss kidnapped
6. main goes home & lives happily ever after

GAG!! ! i hate that!! !

When you have to go solo because your team gets trapped/killed/left behind/ trapped &killed / left behind and killed/ killed but they survive then get trapped/ left behind. I've seen it all

What about the type that you survive some how where everyone else has died, possibly makeing you super human, and others might want you to find out why.
