I'm quite surprised to hear that Super Metroid in particular didnt sell as well. It's considered such a classic and was of such great quality... that's just baffling to me. Granted, if I recall correctly there was a LONG time between Metroid 2 and Super Metroid's release (er... I think) but still, I'm surprised that people would lose interest in it so much like that.
The game did launch in 1994 globally.
Sega Saturn was getting press coverage along with Nintendo 64 and PS1 who were all supposed to launch in 1995 in the West.
Many of the SNES games from 1994 and up (last Nintendo made game launched in Japan in 1999), quickly died at market with everyone ready to move on to the next gen.
SNES games did get a slight sales bump, when Nintendo 64 was delayed until 1996.
Super Metroid, like Earthbound and many other Nintendo made SNES games wound up in bargain bins due to low sales.
Literally at one point Super Metroid was as low as $5 as was Earthbound a few months after launch, just so retailers could clear out the stock.
These game were never restocked due to low demand.
