I retract my earlier statement, sort of: so far, apart from the bosses, it's not as hard as I thought it would be. I guess playing Symphony of the Night and Dawn of Sorrow helped.

At least run WinQuake =) Add "+mlook" to your CFG file somewhere, or type it into the console every time you start (~), and you'll probably also want to reconfigure the movement keys to WASD.

I've been using WASD and inverted mouselook from the start - I think my issues are really more to do with the fact that I'm not as good with mouse and keyboard as I am with a control pad. Switching weapons under pressure is the trickiest issue: if there was a way of enabling this via the mouse wheel à la Doom, that would help a lot. But actually, apart from that, the game has become a lot more playable after I adjusted the virtual CPU speed, turned up the brightness by a notch or two and increased the mouse speed. Thanks for your reference to the console by the way, that's something I'll be playing around with to investigate its potential.

You can bind the mouse wheel if you use a sourceport. I think even WinQuake supports it.

Quake supports gamepads/joysticks. I don't know about using a USB gamepad through DOSBox though, I've never tried it with that particular game.

It's a lot harder to rocket jump without a mouse, though =)

I don't think DOS or WinQuake support it, but type this in the console:
bind mwheelup "impulse 10" (the quotation marks are important)
bind mwheeldown "impulse 12"

Or vice versa.

Don't get much time to play games much these days, but when I get chance I'm normally playing Zelda : BotW, which is possibly the best game I've ever played but definitely the best Zelda I've played since A Link to the Past.

Awhile ago I got into playing the tabletop RPG Pathfinder with a few friends of friends but that group fell apart and recently I've been trying to get myself up to speed enough to GM my own game, but it's proving difficult to get more than 1 person to commit to it.

Anyone else play Pathfinder or D&D?

Getting back into Factorio after the latest update, also got Hard West off of a Humble bundle and been enjoying that, and doing a replay of Tin Star.

Icarus: Alien Vanguard.

A Doom 2 wad by the makers of TNT: Evilution (which formed 50% of the original Final Doom for the PC). It's been criticized for being too bland, but I'm playing it on 'Ultra Violence' level, and it's a decent challenge. Also, having recently played quite a few 'Total Conversions' and modded stuff, it's a refreshing change to be playing in 'bread-and-butter' format.

Symphony of the Night is a very easy game, as much as I love it. Dawn of Sorrow is relatively difficult. Ecclesia is legitimately the most difficult of the GBA/DS Castlevania games, though; the bosses especially.

Big respect to the guy playing Crimes and Punishments, I love that game! It may well be as good as a Sherlock Holmes game will ever be. The sequel was disappointing.

^ :o Well, that's interesting. I didn't find Dawn of Sorrow that hard at all. So far, the only really tough parts in Order are the bosses, though that could easily change, I guess. [I beat the crab on my third try; the other two times I didn't time the magnet launch right and accidentally fell on him.]

It's not so much that Dawn was hard, but that Symphony was so easy :p Ecclesia gets much more difficult in the second half, I remember one boss in particular giving me crazy trouble. It's a shame that Konami will never make a good Castlevania again... how many series have effectively been killed by Konami's business decisions :(

At least there's Bloodstained.

A lot of people said Circle of the Moon was very difficult, but I didn't think it was that bad...definitely had to do a lot more grinding in it than in the other CV games, though.

The games i've been playing recently is Starbound, Sims 4, Civilization VI, Killing Floor 2. There pretty fun games i'd say.

Right now I'm doing my annual replay of the very first Legend of Zelda, but this time I'm trying to see how far I can get without the wooden sword (or the two upgrades).

In some ways it's a little more challenging than I thought it would be, but in other ways, I feel like all I need is perseverance, because all of the tools you need are right there within your reach. I only have two Triforce pieces so far, but I'm making good headway now that I have the raft and the stepladder.

I'm tempted to check a strategy guide, especially because I want to make sure I'm wasting as few precious bombs as possible, but I feel like that would defeat the purpose of challenging myself like this.

Just for the record, the old man was right; it is dangerous to go alone! =)
