Most of em were on my early consoles...

Slaughter House 2 (genesis)
Dragon View (SNES)
Jo and Mac (SNES)
Battle Tanks (N64)
Freedom Fighters (PC)
Final Fantasy (NES)
Jaws (NES)

I actually cant say that these didn't get a lot of credit world wide or anything because i really dont know. These were my favorites that my brothers and friends never could understand my interest in.

I think with there being a fair few stealth games out there, the Tenchu series should have gotten a little more recognition, I find that Tenchu: Fatal shadows has some very satisfying storytelling.

Jade cocoon, yes its a Ps1 game but is so unique and not by any means in an over ambitious way in a done-something-right way, it follows the format that was popular at the time , fighting and capturing monsters like pokemon and digimon but it had a much darker narrative, I really enjoyed it, plus you can carry on playing after you complete it.

Another Ps1 game , "The misadventures of Tron Bonne" very similar to megaman but with what I consider to be brighter personalities, a fun colourful platform game with some rpg elements, I think it could have been popular with more exposure.

Great game indeed.

One of my favorite games that many people I know haven't heard of is Ultima Online.

It had a huge following and still does on player-run servers but many people haven't heard of it, especially new-school MMORPG players!

Body Harvest for the N64. Now there was a great game.

Fiendishly difficult, certainly, but great nonetheless.

Patrician III
Port Royale 1 & 2

Pretty much any of the games Ascaron have made. Fantastic economic simulators with a bit of ship combat and city building and RPG elements thrown in on the side. Very much niche strategy games.

Combat Mission Beyond Overlord
Combat Mission Barbarossa to Berlin
Combat Mission Afrika Korps

Fantastic wargames for the PC. Horribly outdated 3D graphics even when they were released. But still have a strong community with lots of Play be e-mail games going on. Gives you a really good sense of tactical scale combined arms combat in world war 2. I also love its turn based system. You plot and order what your forces are going to do, your opponent does as well (or the A.I does it if single player) you then click go and get a 60 second movie of what takes place. During that time your troops, vehicles/tanks will follow your orders then adapt as circumstances change.

Only downside is it lacks a campaign system. The sequel to these games Combat Mission Shock force had an updated graphics system and was based in modern era. I think its rather horrid compared to the original games. They are now making a world war 2 version of this new game engine I'm just not keen on it doesnt have the same spark that the old game engine did.

I have Breath of fire 4 but not the 3rd one, I would take it they are similar though, and breath of fire 4 is quite good, above average for a ps1 rpg. Then again most ps1 rpgs were good.

Faxanadu for Nintendo. Action-RPG type game, skill building, good attack system, catchy name.

If you go to Gamespot website & look at the score, users give it an 8. I'm just about near that score, although i sometimes replay old games & find their nostalgia feel makes me feel different than when I first played.

I played it myself; I've heard about mantras, the quest for the fountains, visiting the Guru to get a title (i.e. raise your experience level), and so on.

A'ight, prepare for a view into the world primeval.

Wishbringer. An old interactive fiction about a town that is unbelievably friendly in the daytime and incredibly evil at night... with a comic twist. Back in the day when you could die in an adventure game, in fact, you did it often. Also Breakers, another of the kind. These were both on and old Apple... I think it was a IIGS, but I may just be making those letters up.

Sadly, I've always sucked so bad at adventure games that I never completed an adult level one until walkthroughs and hints became readily available online. Still, I've always tried. I got some relief in the discovery of arcade/puzzle games like Arkanoid, Oxyd, and Marble Drop, each of which has gone the way of the Pteranodon.

I don't know whether these are games that didn't get their props at the time, but they're all so old, I figure I can include them here.

When I was a teen there was this game in the arcade called Liquid Kids. It was made by Taito, who brought Bubble Bobble, another childhood fave of mine. :) Anyway ,the game was pretty cutesy but kind of weird, like Bubble Bobble. You played this little brown hippopotamus-like creature who was trying to save his girlfriend, I think. You went through the game balancing a big water-bubble on your stubby little arm and when you threw it it would send a stream at your enemies...like those water-filled bubbles in Bubble Bobble. The music to the first stage of the game was really cute and bouncy, with squeak-toys and trains in it, and the boss enemies were really weird. The first one I remember was a huge mechanical rabbit that bounced around the screen and it woud split open and a big propeller of fireballs like in SMB would start twirling around. Anyway I used to really like that game but I haven't seen it in years. :(

Was just about to post the same without looking through the rest of the thread...

The game is still pretty good, I decided to play Descent 2 again last month. Though the first Descent uses the cpu cycles to judge game speed, so on newer systems it's almost impossible to play.
