Where did you find an "Egg Man" in Sonic 2?
He is known as Dr. Robotnik in early games. Somewhere during the dreamcast era, he started calling himself Dr. Eggman. The last game I remember him still using the name Dr. Robotnik was in Sonic Adventure although Sonic called him "Egg man" as an insult because his machines have the word "Egg" at the beginning.
To add to this, there is a misconception that Robotnik is his original name, thus he shouldn't be called Eggman. But the truth is that Eggman was his original name in Japan; Sega just changed his name in the US later so that it matches up with the Japanese version. Stranger still, this misconception is thrown about by Sonic fans all the time. >_<
I remember in the comics they gave him a back story where before he turned evil, he was once known as Dr. Kintobor (Stupid name by the way). If they used the japanese name in the Western releases of the early games, I wonder how the comics would've been affected. Dr. Namgge? How do you pronounce that? Another stupid name.
