Is gaming rubbish at the moment? Will it recover?
YES , Tomb Raider has become Dude/shoot Raider , time to get Lara back to the Tombs , I'm generally optimistic about gaming TR I'm not so sure ...
Yes. The last Tomb Raider is a prime example of the bloated, homogenised, humourless games I was criticising. I used to really enjoy the series when it was about exploring and solving puzzles. The new one looks great but I can't summon up enough enthusiasm to sit down and play it.
For everyone who thinks gaming is in a good place: which titles (on any platform) either released in the past year or to be released in this year would you cite as examples of great games?
Outlast comes to mind. So does Lone Survivor: Director's Cut. I'm really looking forward to No Man's Sky. I could probably come up with a list if given enough time, but that's what comes to mind off the top of my head.
Games are still movie oriented right now, all the investments isn't put into gameplay so much. I think its a fair trade for now, if people want something truly interesting they will always get a chance when people get bored of call of doody.
If they bored of call of duty...
Remember that the medium is still relatively young and is growing and changing very quickly.
I blame the *(&k faces who tormented us autistics for our "unusual" hobby in the 80's* and decided they to want to be gamers in the noughties and beyond.
I'm only 1/2 joking
*I got it from my friends parents they didn't want their precious darling going to the cities arcade cause Japenese criminals hang out their , their was a lot of paranoia for the Japs back than esp so here in OZtralia) and other wierdos , gets the eye balling.

Call of Booty.
I don't think it's rubbish though it is boring !
I guess it keeps the simple minded amused .

I wouldnt get your hopes up on that one.
CoD likely aint going away for years yet.... it's just too big, and too popular.
And even when it DOES.... other series will come along that mimic it, right down to the movie bit. The series is practically a money printer for the ones that own it, and because publishers are about as creative as a rock, they'll tend to just copy whoever is hitting it big. Since CoD exploded as it did, and since "movie-games" became ultra-popular.... yeah, those trends are going to last a LONG time.
I wouldnt expect the medium to change among the "major" games all that fast anymore at this point. The more expensive the games get, the more set in stone the trends become. The change will only REALLY happen among games that dont cost much to make.
^^
True just look at Hollywood , Die Hard was "fun " as a 80's child , 20 + years latter and it's still going on ....

I'd love to see some CoD players try Counter Strike. They probably wouldn't even last five minutes, because CS actually requires you to *think* and use tactics rather than just kill whoring. It's a relatively simple, streamlined game, but it gives players an equal playing field, so you can't get away with falling back on perks or killstreaks, because there aren't any!

I try not be elitist about these things though I do anyways , these dumb jocks tormented me growing up for my interest , so now it's pay back! COD is a casual game , I "enjoyed" it for a couple of play throughs , enjoyed it like a 80's action film as a 12 year old , wised up , grew up and moved on ....

I was able to borrow a copy of TitanFall for the XB360, and.... meh. Seemed like Computerized Online Daycare with robots. Big ones.
Funny thing was, I didn't compl etely suck at it, and get frustrated, like I typically do with CoD. I just got bored. Maybe there's something to be said for rage-quitting as a cure for boredom?

I don't think it's necessarily rubbish, it's just getting to the point where you have to be an informed consumer to know what is likely to be good and what isn't. EA has turned into straight crap, the way they're handling The Sims 4 is pathetic. The only current gen system I have is the 3DS and I like it, all the games I've played so far have been good to great. Pokemon X, Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies, Bravely Default, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Conception II...enjoyed them all and there's a lot more that looks promising.

I personally actually really rather like TitanFall, myself. But then, it's perfect for me; something like CounterStrike is my bane, with all of the tactical-ness and the being patient, whatever "patient" means, certainly not a word in MY vocabularly, and I dont snipe (which many shooters seem to encourage).... EVER. For any reason. In any game. Period. No exceptions. I cant think of a more boring task. CS seems exactly the sort of game where that particular cure for insomnia- er, I mean, that particular strategy.... would be useful.
Titanfall encourages MOVEMENT, which is a huuuuuuuuuge selling point to me over many other shooters. Thouigh it also depends on the mode being played; Attrition is pure chaos, wheras something like Hardpoint or whatever actually takes teamwork.
Though, I'm also playing the PC version and dont have to deal with your typical Xbox Live idiots/kids, so that helps alot. ALOT. Games like this are always MUCH more fun when your teammates/opponents arent 10 years old.
In other news, I ended up with a 3DS sorta on accident. Not a bad device, though the XL model, which is the one I have, has the WORST SPEAKERS EVER. Holy heck. They're terrible.
Normally I wouldnt have bought one, but I was at an anime con, going through the vendor hall, was carrying way more money than I should have, and wasnt finding enough interesting stuff to buy.... me being a total impulse buyer, this led to buying that thing because it existed.
Only have Animal Crossing and Pokemon Y for it, aint played Pokemon yet. The big problem for me though is that there aint many retail games for the thing that'll appeal to me... most things I'd want are likely on the e-shop or whatever the heck it's called. Monster Hunter being the main retail one I'd want.
The thing sure as heck still cant compete with my iPad for any of this, but it's still not a bad device.

I thought you didn't like mainstream /easy games , I'm kind of like that I sort of have a soft spot for Halo , sold my collection thinking of buying it again (perhaps)

Nah, in regards to mainstream games, it's not the fact of them being mainstream that I hate, as that idea makes no sense. What I hate is the trends that are so pervasive among many mainstream games. For example, the unending cutscenes. Or really slow-moving cover-based FPS games, JRPGs with tons of grinding and nonsensical everything, simplistic linear levels with no exploration, a near total lack of difficulty.... stuff like that. It's a pretty large list, and most mainstream games have a few of these, because the big publishers think they should. Titanfall is an example of how I think it should be done. Near total lack of cutscenes or story crap, huge maps with tons of places to go and tons of ways to get there, very fast moving instead of very slow... it really doesnt use any of the trends that I hate so much, which is why I got into it.
As for the 3DS games, Animal Crossing isnt supposed to even be associated with the idea of "challenge".... it's not that type of game. Similar to something like Goat Simulator in that regard, which also has nothing meant to be challenge, and which I play very frequently. It's more of a pleasant break from the usual sorts of things that I play (the hyper-difficult stuff), and the sort of game where you just do whatever. Pokemon is.... Pokemon. I'm not expecting all that much difficulty from the main story progression and areas, though that has yet to be seen. But the multiplayer aspect of the game will provide plenty of challenge, and there's definitely tons of things to do and go after, and all sorts of strategies that can be used.
Something like Monster Hunter on the other hand, is more of my typical sort of thing. I've played that series plenty. It's NOT an easy game, and you have to go into it with the understanding that it WILL flatten you, probably sooner rather than later. There's LOTS to do in any game in that series, and it just keeps getting tougher as you go along.
^^^
Yeah I thought Titanfall looked semi decent , I just worry if it has longevity . I pretty much agree with everything you wrote except for the grinding on JRPGS , it wouldn't be a JRPG with out it , in fact I was mildly annoyed with Dark Souls 2 that they put fast travel in it .

Mostly what Titanfall needs is more STUFF.
Not maps, it's got enough of those, and they're huge and complicated.
Has enough modes too, though one or two more certainly couldnt hurt, but it's not a priority.
No, what it needs are more of OTHER things. More weapons of all 3 types, primary, sidearm, and anti-titan, more than just 3 types of titans, more weapons FOR the titans, more types of burn cards, more tier 1/2 equipment for both pilots and titans.... stuff like that. These wouldnt just help, they'd help IMMENSELY, as "not enough of these" has pretty much been THE complaint with the game. The good thing is that the stuff that IS there is decently versatile, but it really does need more. As much as I really like the game, I totally agree with that.
They have already said they've got a bunch of that stuff planned, so that's good.
As it is, the game is pretty great even in it's current state; so many different ways of approaching situations and crossing the map (as opposed to nearly all other FPS games, where your routes through the maps are VERY static) and reason to actually freaking MOVE.
My only real problem with it right now is that the matchmaker is made of crazy. I'm pretty sure it was made by them having an extremely drunk, blindfolded monkey sit down in front of a computer, covering him in spiders, and then having him bash his face into the keyboard over and over until a matchmaker was produced. I mean, really, the thing is freaking insane. Balanced matches are hard to come by. It's easy to FIND a match at least, even during the middle of the night for me, but.... yeah. It's still messed up.
I sure as heck hope it's got longevity. If the game should go down..... ugh. My interest in the genre will die a horrible, screaming, burning death a second time over. I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate games like CoD and Battlefield, and much to my endless annoyance and deep hatred, those accursed things dominate the market, and cause other games to try to copy them. I'd happily erase them from reality if I could, that'd be fun.
But we'll see. I'm hoping to see other games in the genre pop up that dont do things in the CoD/BF way, and there's been the occaisional one, but they're still coming in at a trickle.
