Starbound looks awesome.
Have you played Terraria?
Starbound really is pretty great. So far, I'm liking it alot more than I liked Terraria. It's far from finished though.... there is actually ALOT of content already (so.... many.... items....) but quite a ton of stuff is still missing.... the list of planned features sounds bloody amazing, but most of them arent there yet. Still lots to do though.
How "complete" is Starbound? Me and a few others wanted to play it but when we read on their website character wipes were possible we decided not to play it just yet. Is it even completable? How buggy is it?
Well, it depends on what you call "complete". Alot of major planned features are still missing, such as ship-to-ship combat/boarding, and other equally awesome-sounding things. Combat is also a little simpler right now than it will be later; enemies on each planet are procedurally generated, so it's squashing together various body parts and making new monsters for each one, which is great and all, but currently there's only 2 AI types (passive and aggressive) and the number of possible attacks they have is still low.... well, "low" being a relative term, with this game. There's still quite alot of different types of damaging stuff that enemies will try to do to you, BUT, the AI is a little obsessed with the two most useless enemy attacks there is, which involves them trying to "charge" at you over procedural terrain.... yeah, they get stuck alot. So that aspect still needs some work (and alot of things are planned there), but when enemies ARENT getting caught on tiny bits of land, the combat is entertaining, though currently simple. The weapon variety is downright stupid, even in freaking alpha,, and the hilarious name generator means that you end up with weapons with names like "Screaming Crunch-Squisher".
The list of planned features, by the way:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/12 ... eam+RSS%29
That list isnt all-inclusive either.... they've already come up with even MORE ideas, some of which are beginning to appear in the game. Each patch has been massive, and patches are frequent.
There's going to be a quest system in the game, which in this one is meant to be an important thing, with both "story" quests and of course tons of randomly-generated one, but this currently is not active. There's LOTS of NPCs to find, many of them having stores and such, but interaction with them other than buying from them (or attacking them) is very limited right now.
There's currently 10 "sectors" to play through, with a boss that must be summoned and defeated in each in order to gain the item that allows you to travel to the next. If you know what the Wither is in Minecraft, summoning these bosses is very similar, it requires that you have a few very specific annoying-to-get items, find a proper spot, and then summon the boss. As the devs say, this method of game progression is temporary and is going to be entirely replaced later... look in the game's "news" on Steam for more info on this bit. They've got some interesting ideas there.
Lots of different planet types (and asteroid belts!) to go to, certain ones requiring that you have special equipment before you go to them, like airless moons. This part of the game already has TONS of variety. Not just different entire planet types, but alot of different biomes within each. There's no shortage of exploration right now. Lots and lots of enormous dungeons and such to get too. And about 5 billionty different types of blocks and ores and such.
And so on and so on. Really, by my opinion, there's no reason NOT to get the game right now. Oh, and the character wipes are done now, by the way.
The only problem I had with it was that there's no REAL tutorial, and the game does not explain some things that rather need explaining. For instance, it tends to give alot of new players the impression that you have to stick with the ultra-terrible initial digging tool for some time (which can only dig 4 blocks at a time, VERY slowly), when in reality one of the very first things you should do is make a pickaxe (all picks dig 9 blocks at a time, and even the weakest is pretty quick about it), and not knowing this fact can add a couple of hours onto the "get started" part of the game. It also doesnt explain how the 3D printer on your ship works, or how "techs" work.
As for bugs, I've never found any.
I think the only OTHER problem is that the game is a major time-sink, but.... you probably already knew this
So easy to get sucked into exploring or building and such.
