Ok, objectively speaking, there's no FF more overrated than VII. It's just not possible.

This is because the crappy PS1 was very overrated too back in the day, and FF:VII was one of the few really good games for it. So people made it out to be better than it actually was.

As far as FF games go, I'd really tend to agree with you, Tross. I found 4 to be very lacking, even back in my early teen days. I liked the music, but Rydia and Cecil were not well-rounded characters, and the storyline felt rushed. FF6, FF9, and FF12 are what I consider to be the greatest accomplishments for the franchise, though I have played FF5 on an emulator, and FF3 on my DS and enjoyed them both. I couldn't get behind the Squall/Rinoa arc (both of whom I found highly irritating), and the Laguna portions were too far-between. Additionally, I disliked the elevator music feel to most of the soundtrack, though Liberi Fatali (title sequence) is still listenable.

FF12 is really the only shining star that Square/Enix has had, in my book, since the PS1 days of yore. Atlus and Namco have taken the top spots in my mind. Xenogears. Xenosaga. Disgaea. Ogre Battle. The list is extensive.

Agreed. I'm not familiar with Namco's offerings besides Xenogears and Xenosaga, which respectively I felt were overbloated and overambitious. But in my mind Atlus has taken the top publisher spot for JRPGs this generation. I did love Dragon Quest VIII though too.

Few good games? I recall the ps1 having a massive quantity of memorable games, unless you're talking about the early days. I'm not saying the n64 wasn't a good system either. It had a few shining gems. In fact, many would call The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time one of the greatest games, if not the greatest game of that gen. However, I was a ps1 kid, and I enjoyed a lot of great games on that system. Even now, with digital downloads, I find myself enjoying some great ps1 classics for the first time. I'm sorry, but the ps1 definitely had a bigger quantity of good games, though to be fair, whether they were the best games is purely subjective. I can understand why a lot of Nintendo fans didn't like Sony's first system. With its powerful hardware, and disc based storage, a lot of companies jumped ship, and FF fans especially, were left out in the cold. Ninty made up for it in my opinion though, with some great first party offerings, and even a few great third party games like Golden Eye, and Rare titles that were actually good. In short, I think both systems were great, and getting into a 64 bit console wars discussion now, is pointless.

lol The Nintendo 64 was way more powerful than the PS1. Fully 3D games looked like crap on the PS1. It couldn't do graphics even close to games like Super Mario 64 and Zelda OOT.

The PS1 has some good games besides the square RPGs though like Castlevania SOTN, Mega Man 8, and Mega Man X4, X5, X6 since they were side scrollers.

Right. That's why games like Metal Gear Solid, the Final Fantasy 8 and 9, and platformers like Tomba 2, and the Crash and Spyro games, as well as survival horror games like Resident Evil 3 look amazing, even by today's standards. N64 did have 3d games, and I'm not denying that OoT is an equally great looking game, but most other n64 games didn't look half as smooth as high end ps1 games.

The PS1 was unable to smooth jagged edges on polygons which is the main reason it did 3D so badly. It was also about one third as fast as the N64(33 MHz vs. 93 MHz). But I guess you liked the PS1 better back then so you say whatever suits your purpose.

I don't know. N64 games looked more jagged to me. But, it has been a while. I'd rather not argue about 64 bit consoles. Years have passed, and I'm usually more interested in discussing topics of mutual interest than getting into arguments about anything. There have been a couple times where I got into arguments for one reason or another(the internet is a breeding ground for that sort of thing, and I'm not perfect), but please don't take it personally when it happens. I think we both agree that it's best if we end it here.

The fanbase civil war between FFVI fans and FFVII fans is an extension of the exasperating Sony vs Nintendo console war which has been going on just as long. FFVI and FFVII are both excellent games that were released at the pinnacle of the series. CT was also a masterpiece.

I'm guessing no one's played the Shin Megami Tensei series? Those games cater to both those who don't feel like trying and those who love to rip their hair out over how freakin' hard the game is. Atlus releases a lot of games to that effect, especially a more western-influenced game like Demon Souls. That game will make you cry. Seriously.

Thank god someone agrees with me!Chrono trigger is the most overrated games ever made (bad plot, flat characters, boring gameplay, good graphics, good story).

While I did like it overall, I still fail to see what the massive hype was about. It was a big step down from the other two Final Fantasy games on the SNES. It had multiple endings? Big $#@ deal. It felt like a cheap FF knockoff to me even though it was supposedly made by a 'dream team'.

I did love the New Game + feature and wish every RPG had it. Nothing more fun than taking down a boss with one hit on the second go around as well as a chance to pick up all the items you missed.
