My favourite is Link to the Past. I recently started playing Twilight Princess but I gave up because there seemed to be a lot of wandering round villages talking to people and learning things before you can get going. But I looked at some Youtube clips of the later stages of the game and it looks quite dark and atmospheric, so I'm thinking of giving it another go. Has anyone else persevered with it and found that it's worth the effort?

Yes.

skyward sword came very close to being the best in the series, but it just had way too many flaws. it had way too much padding. it was a 35-45 hour game which could have been cut into a 25-30 hour game.

That's an extremely difficult question. No one Zelda game "kills" the others, they all have their strengths and weaknesses. Maybe my favorite is Ocarina of Time. I love the music, and it's pretty balanced in it's strengths. Good pacing, good dungeons, good sidequests and secrets. Majora's Mask is in a special place of it's own for being so unique. I really wanted to love Skyward Sword the most, because it had so much potential, but the game had some flaws. Still one of my favorites, though.

As far as the 2D games go, Link's Awakening is easily my favorite. I may like it as much as OOT, but it's hard to compare the 2D Zeldas to the 3D ones, plus it's a bit simpler than the console games.

Wind Waker gets an honorable mention for it's story, art, and setting.

...Can you tell I'm a Zelda fan? :)

Ocarina. Also Twilight Princess, possibly because it's the one I'm playing at the moment. Also because the art style is just plain cool.

Really want to get Windwaker soon, too. Never played that one. And I am ridiculously excited for SS.

Majora's Mask, hands down. In fact, I don't even hugely like any other Zelda games besides that one. I like it because it is so creepy. Not creepy in a cheap "aah a monster" way, but creepy in a bizarre "I don't understand..." way.

I can't choose between Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess. I didn't really like Skyward Sword all that much, honestly. I was kind of disappointed... Maybe I should give it another chance, though.

Tie between Links Awakening DX, Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time, and A Link To The Past. My least favorite is Twilight Princess.

A Link to the Past was a magical experience for me back then. It was the first time I encountered a game like that, and every little thing about it was so exciting and powerful to me. I remember trying and failing to convey the story and experience to a friend at the time, which is a memorable event for me, since I never talk much about anything to other people.
I've bought a GameCube and a Wii purely because I wanted that experience again, but unfortunately the other Zelda games never managed to hook me like LttP did. I didn't like the change from 2D to 3D too much. So both consoles have been sitting there pretty much unused, looking at me accusingly.

I'm kind of surprised that no one else picked the first game.

Not at all surprised how many people picked Ocarina of Time, though
