It was the closest I've come to feeling the feeling one would feel in a movie like The Last Man on Earth, or I Am Legend.

I've got a huge design document in my head for a simulation game based on the I Am Legend novel...I've got a good amount of the groundwork programming finished, but I haven't touched it in a long while now =(

I'm not even sure how much interest there would be in something like that, but I just can't leave the idea alone.

Last time I tried working on it, I had the "brilliant" idea of trying to copy my hometown, 1:1 scale, as it was in the '80s...and quickly realized what a terrible idea it actually was =) So I'm going to have to go back to the drawing board with that one...

The previous game (System Shock 2) was a lot scarier.

Not overly scary, but the butlers and the midwives sure as heck freaked me out.

Does the first XCOM count?

I'd say it counts. It had quite a few frightening bits, especially since you could enter a dark building and have an alien right next to you, and not know it.

I find Silent Hill 2 to be one the most terrifying of games that I've ever played. Amnesia comes in at a close second, though.

I still think about those strait-jacket monsters that crawled on the ground and had that high pitched cry. Not to mention Pyramid Head!

Am I the only one that get's freaked out in the city on Dead Island? And I was young when I played it, but resident evil 2 made me scared. I was also afraid of doom when I played it, but I was also 8 at the time.

Just started watching Pewdiepie's playthroughs of various survival and psychological horror games. Slender, Containment Breach, etc... He makes them amusing and watchable -- I don't think I could play many of them myself!

I found out about Pewdiepie's playthroughs since he does a great playthrough of a(n) historic Doom WAD called "The Ghoul's Forest" that I am pretty certain is the prototype of many of these indie horror games.

Despite being fairly cowardly with respect to horror games and the various subgenres, somehow I made it through Dead Space playing exclusively late at night with the lights off. Basically, it was late at night since that's all the time I had, and the lights were off so as not to wake anyone up by accident. I am not sure how I made it through.

Resident Evil 1-3: The first game scared me the most. Just the sounds the zombies made were terrifying. I had to sleep with the lights on for a while because I was afraid a hunter would kill me...
Silent Hill 1 & 2: Both games scared the hell out of me. Pyramid Head was the worst.
Tomb Raider 2: Although not a horror, this game still terrified me. I remember the first time I got to the bottom of that pit you had to zipline over on the first level. I thought there was nothing there... then a bloody Tyrannosaurus came out of nowhere!
Ahh, memories...

I've always loved scary games, I guess because they feel like being in a horror movie when you play them. :P

Some of my favorites that actually scared me are:

Siren
Siren Blood Curse/Siren New Translation (I have an import copy of New Translation)
Fatal Frame
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 3
Resident Evil Outbreak
Silent Hill 3
Haunting Ground

I guess if you look at it from a perspective of a soldier in the game along with the title screen, I can see why that would be a little scary. Plus Chryssalids are very terrifying. (I wish I could have played it... It looked so awesome)
