Confabulation refers to when someone's mind makes up a memory for them to fill in a gap, or creates an explanation to account for something they don't understand. This often occurs after some kinds of strokes or traumatic brain injury. For instance, someone's arm may be paralyzed, but they refuse to acknowledge that that is their arm. They think it's someone else's arm. Or they might make up stories about their day that they completely believe, but that the therapist knows are impossible (like, you definitely didn't go parachuting that day if you've been in the Neuro ICU of a hospital for a week). Anyway, we've been doing aphasia and TBI in my class now, so we've talked about it a bunch. Denial of illness (known as "anosognosia"), which often leads to confabulation, can be a huge problem with some patients.
