Ports of call

Basically, you start out with x millions and buy one ship, you make more money and buy more ships, you buy better ships and make more money. (and so on)

Then there are "cutscenes" like your ships being boarded by pirates (no, not oneeyed, these guys have kalashnikows), your ship sinking and other scenes.

Then there are minigames popping up, like piloting your ship through a reef, icebergs (etc) as well as being able to manually enter/leave any harbour in the game.

There is a pure simulation part too, that allow you to play around with the ships, that is what the video is about.

(And yes, PoC was made originally on the Amiga...)

In about 20 minutes I'm going to trade in some old games for Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. :D

Update: Only got Mario. Oh well, I still have Silent Hill 2 to finish. And Mario came with a free poster, which is awesome.

Because of the thread talking about survival horor games on this site I got pushed into my interest in the stories in the genre, first via watching a Cthulu walkthrough, and started watching a bit of a Silent Hill: Homecomeing, but today I bought Silent Hill: Homecomeing instead to experience ut properly. Well I am still scared in just the begining part even though I saw it done in a walkthrough, though I am trying to forget what I saw to not cheapen it.

I just got this game called Tachyon: The Fringe off of Steam. It's a space fighter simulator. Older game, came out in about 2000 but it was selling for $10 so I bought it. I've been comparing it to Freelancer because that is the only other game in the genre that I've played. So far, the graphics are slightly worse but the world itself is more realistic when it comes to scale (size of stations and planets versus one-man fighters) as well as the arrangement of objects in space (Freelancer had everything on almost the same 2d plane for pity's sake).

The controls are cooler because unlike Freelancer, Tachyon allows you to actually use a joystick. However, there's one small snag with the joystick, for some reason tilting left or right will yaw your ship while rudder pedals or twisting the joystick will roll it. That's the complete opposite of the standard flight control that most pilots - space or otherwise - are used to, and it's really awkward especially when you're used to the usual configuration. There's no way to fix it within the game; however, I was able to get a profiling software for my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro that let me screw around with the device driver, and allowed me to switch the X and Z axes to better control my ship.

Single-Player is ok, fun but there's an obvious lack of free play: You have to accept a contract mission before you can even modify your ship, let alone leave the spaceport, but once you've completed a mission you can go basically anywhere until you need to dock again. There's supposed to be an in-depth multiplayer that's Steam supported, but I haven't tried it yet. There's barely anyone on anyways but I've heard there's a group dedicated to this game. There's even a project called FringeSpace, who is working on a total conversion mod to upgrade the game's engine to the one used in Freespace 2. I'll have to see how that works out.

In short, not the best game when it comes to the genre, but it's cheap and it isn't a big game to run, it runs fine on my factory-standard laptop and supposedly works find in multiplayer even if you have a dial-up connection.

Actually, there is no reason to roll in space, rolling just takes up time. Think about it, as long as you get your sights onto a target, you can hit it. There is no gravity in space that affect you.

(Well, except maby in the old Amiga game "Warhead" when you jumped into the gravity well of that black hole...)

As for Freelancer, it gave me many hours of exploration and cool PvP... because most people who play such games suck and should stick to Battlefield type games where they only have to think in 2D :D

There is. You just don't notice you're falling, because everything else around you is also falling.
