I recently played Syberia I and II, and The Longest Journey. Has anyone played these games? If so, can you recommend games that are similar, with preferably a female protagonist?

The longest journey has to be in my top 5 favorite games of all time and it's sequel, Dreamfall also. There needs to be more games like that with great stories and puzzle elements. I can't really recommend anything because I didn't even know if their were similar games on the market. The most similar game I can think of is Shenmue for the Sega Dreamcast.

I have never played Syberia, but if it's similar I'll have to give it a try.

I think you'd probably enjoy Beyond Good and Evil. It can be had for a song for multiple systems (PC, Xbox, Gamecube, PS2) and it was just recently re-released for Xbox 360 on Xbox Live Arcade.

I don't know if Syberia was anything like Dreamfall, but the protagonist was female and gutsy too. This is why I enjoyed them both.

Thanks! I'll check it out. :)

I haven't played those myself, but they used to make tons of adventure games back before the genre died sometime in the late '90s (not to be confused with the Zelda-esque adventure genre).

I can't think of any that let you be a female, though...King's Quest IV I guess? I think the first Alone in the Dark let you be a female, and I know most of the Resident Evil games did, though they're in the survival horror sub-genre, which focuses a bit less on puzzles (especially RE) and a bit more on killing things.

Oh! Maniac Mansion let you choose female characters (can't remember if the sequel did). The Monkey Island series definitely had a gutsy female protagonist, but you didn't get to play as her.

Anyway, look into Infocom, Icom, Sierra Online, and LucasArts, they were the kings of adventure back in the 80s/90s.

tomb raider :)*****
Perfect dark **
Silent Hill*****
Bloodrayne***
bayonetta
wet
mirrors edge
Mass effect - you can make your character female

from what i understand syberia games are puzzle games.

sadly i cannot reccomend any puzzle games like that except for tomb raider or mirrors edge, but if you find some, let me know :D

So The Longest Journey 1 is officially called The Longest Journey, and The Longest Journey 2 is Dreamfall? I've played through the second one and tried the first one, but it wouldn't continue beyond CD1. I've also played Syberia I and II. These games are similar to them:

- Broken Sword series (I've only played The Sleeping Dragon, which was okay, but I'm told the first ones are better)
- Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit)

Games with realistic environments aren't usually purely puzzle of purely adventure, but a mix. If you want puzzle, there's Return to Mysterious Island (and lots of others I haven't played). If you want adventure with less puzzle and more parkour and fighting, try Batman: Arkham Asylum and Assassin's Creed (Zelda for N64 is another one). The Silent Hill series and even Amnesia: The Dark Descent have somewhat similar gameplay mechanics, but they belong in the survival horror genre. I loved Silent Hill 1 and 2, but haven't finished Amnesia yet because you are basically defenseless and have to rely on hiding and sneaking.

Those are two completely different genres that are both called "adventure games". Usually they differentiate between the two by referring to Zelda-esque games as "action adventure".

Try the King's Quest series. You buy and download them from GOG now apparently. Princess Rosella from King's Quest 4 and 7 was actually the very first female protagonist in an adventure game. I think one of the Gabriel Knight games have a female protagonist as well.
