Never heard of it. Beneath a Steel Sky is currently freeware. That's a good adventure game.

Probably Rogue, though I haven't played it in a while.

Dwarf Fortress, of course. And after more than a year, the new release should be out soon! Squeeeee!

(Though if donations count as "cost", it's the most expensive game I've ever played, MMOs included. )

Americas Army 2: if 3 had the right amount of content and was as polished, then 3, but 2 is better still.

Dwarf Fortress. I love building bases, Adventure mode isn't very good though.

Dwarf fortress is superb.

I also like Unreal World
Its quite a cool survival game were you are in a dark ages wilderness of Finland you have to go out hunt for your own food build traps and assemble your own shelter together. It's like a bushcraft simulator of sorts quite fun.

I recent discovered a 4x Strategy game called Aurora
Aurora forum link

While its got absolutely minimum graphics the design options and strategy are fantastic. You have to design all aspects of your ships right down to the individual missiles and fire control systems. Mind blowing amount of options. Big warning though it does have a learning curve at the gradient of a steep cliff not for the faint hearted. But if you liked Master of Orion or space empires its a fantastic find.
