Okay, it's a showdown between the survival horror franchises.

Note: I am not counting stuff like Devil May Cry and Bloodrayne. Those are more like horror-action.

Feel free to suggest any other franchises if your favourite isn't on the poll.

The contestants are:

Alone in the Dark

Clock Tower

Resident Evil
(Biohazard for the Japanese)

Silent Hill

Project Zero (Fatal Frame for Americans)

Parasite Eve

Start votin'.

3 votes (one apiece for Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil and Silent Hill), and no posts?

I think the Clock Tower games were pretty cool. Even on SNES, I was scared when Scissorman popped out from behind a door and stabbed me to death.

Another one of my favorites is Eternal Darkness.

I'm pretty excited for Sadness on Wii too. Not sure when it's supposed to come out, but it sounds like it'll be great.

Resident Evil was fun. I never really liked Silent Hill. Never played Fatal Frame or Alone In The Dark. Not sure how much I'd consider Parasite Eve "survival horror."

I didn't like Resident Evil until Resident Evil 4, which would probably be more horror-action rather than survival horror anyway.

I've only played Silent Hill 4 from the Silent Hill series. I thought it was the worst PS2 game I've ever played, and I have a lot of games for that system.

The SNES Clock Tower was terrifying. I liked how the character you play as is utterly useless at putting up any resistance, so you have to run and hide. It's also interesting how she trips over sometimes, which reminds you you're not some hero, you're a teenage girl. Right before you get some stabby stabby.

I hated Silent Hill 4. Too hard. Play any of the previous ones. Silent Hill 2 is meant to be really good.

Yeah, Silent Hill 4 wasn't even supposed to be an SH game. It just got turned into one after preproduction...it was rather terrible, despite some really great moments. The other SH games more than make up for it, especially SH2. Plus, I just think it has the most interesting universe of them.

RE has had a LOT of really terrible games, so I can't vote for it, especially since I found it's return to form, RE4, to be really overrated even though it was good overall. It had many problems as good points, I felt.

I never have played any of the Clock Tower games, but I've seen cutscenes from Clock Tower 3 (such as the ones in this video):

Some that s**t's pretty damn intense. If the controls and gameplay and what not are decent then maybe it should win.

Alone in the Dark gets props for being the premier survival horror game, but there have been so many bad games in its series (such as AITD4: The New Nightmare) that I find it hard to vote for.

I think that a really really great survival horror series has yet to come--one that just had perfect game after perfect game. While I love SH and voted for it, I think that all the SH games have some pretty major problems...so I don't know.

never seen 3 of those, alone in the dark, clock tower, and project zero, so I can't rate them in this one. The ones I have seen (and played all of them) are Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Parasite Eve..... And I'd rate them in the order I just listed them too.

That's "The Room," right? I rented it, got through all the areas, then got disgusted with the game when it made me go through all the areas again after I got through the hospital. I thought the first half of the game was fun, though.

It plays pretty well. The two biggest problems I had with it were the boss battles and the ending. The rest was pretty solid, I thought. The first Clock Tower for SNES was the best of them though, if you ask me.

Resident Evil 4 is one of the best games I've ever played. I've also played the remake of Resident Evil on the Gamecube which was good but I hated the control system. I've never played any of the others unfortunately. I loved the Silent Hill movie so I would really like to play those games.

So yeah, since I'm new, I figured I'd necro-rez a dead thread rather than start my own new one. I'll probably do this from time to time since I'd rather see an old thread live again than start a new one.

Right now I have a PS3 that's fully backwards compatible with PS2 AND PS1, so I've been ordering survival horror games like mad for the last few weeks. This being my favorite genre, I already owned and beaten all of the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series.

While Silent Hill is my favorite series to date, I have discovered a great gem that is almost overlooked: Rule of Rose. I don't have enough posts yet to link, but needless to say, it's VERY dark, has fantastic music and an intriguing story. I've played it for about 4 hours so far and I can't get enough of it. It shows children at their cruelest.

Check it out if you ever get the chance.

Also, Siren for the PS2 and the remake, Siren: Blood Curse, which is only available on the Playstation Online Store.

I've also picked up all the Clock Tower games and Fatal Frame games. I've beaten Fatal Frame a few months ago before going on my buying spree, but I can only play one game at a time.

I feel the compulsion to "finish" things before I can start something else... is this an Aspergian trait? Anyways, it looks like I won't be able to get to those for a while, Rule of Rose is taking up all my time.

I've also acquired Haunting Ground, which is supposed to be really good too. But that will have to wait. :P

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is my favorite, but it's not on this list =(

I agree with Veresae, AitD started off really good, but 4 wasn't so great...2 crashed on me about halfway through, so I haven't finished that yet (but I liked it, even though it was less Lovecraft and more pirate voodoo), and then I'll need to figure out how to get 3 to run. I have 5, so I guess I'll give it a shot, though I haven't heard anything good about it.

There's something about the RE games I really like, but honestly, I do not play them for the gameplay...trying to suffer through those stupid controls, turning a corner just to walk right into the arms of a zombie, having to hoard as much ammo/weapons as you can because you know you'll run out, running through the same area over and over because you keep dying but don't want to waste an ink ribbon, etc. etc. etc :x Though I really liked the dodge feature that Nemesis had, I thought it fixed a lot of problems, and almost made the knife into a useful weapon.

Haven't played any of the other games on the poll.

I think that Dino Crisis 1 is the best survival horror game. I'm somewhat biased because I love that game as well as nostalgia but it is extremely good. As well as realistic (as realistic as games with dinosaurs, zombies or otherwordly beasts can get anyway). But the second one was more of a shooter, it wasn't survival horror anymore. The third one... I don't like to admit it exists.

Out of the games on the list, probably Silent Hill though.

I vote for silent hill, mainly because it's the only franchise I've played, played the 2nd, and am currently playing through the 3rd ( you do not know how hard it was to find a copy of this game), 4 was a different game with the silent hill name stamped onto it so I haven't played it and 5 wasn't even made by the original developers and I hear is full of fan service so I've steered clear of it as well.

I've tried clock tower 3 and while the powerless character idea is cool and all, I just don't like to be running away the entire game so I didn't give it a chance beyond the week I had it rented from the video store.

I don't like ghosts, so I've kept away from the fatal frame games so I'm not sure if they're good or not, but from what I've seen it looks like it gets the job done in the scare department.

And one that I recommenced it Condemned: Criminal Origins, it's made like a first person shooter but it definitly has a myriad of scary moments (effing mannequins) with an awesome final boss fight.

but stay way from the sequel the only tense part was the grizzly bear, and near the end it leaves supernatural horror in the dust for something that looks like it belongs in half-life 2.

Silent Hill ftw! Not just the best survival horror franchise, one of the best game franchises period.
And the person who only played Silent Hill 4, baaaaad place to start. Give Silent Hill 2 a try and get back to me. :]
