Hello.
"Hack'n slash" is a king of videogame with intense sword fighting action action, sometimes with a bit of RPG mecanisms. It is sometimes confused with RPG, but is typically more linear and axed toward fights more than roleplaying and choices (I don't mean "no scenario" but "heavily guided scenario").

A typical Hack'n slash includes a lot of action, a lot of different items and some RPG systems like XP and levelling. Kill monsters, loot gold and items, buy and sell things, explore deeper the dungeons, become more powerful.

A few Hack'n slash I heavily advice you to try :

Golden Axe (1989)

Image

Choose a character from three choices and go through levels (travel in a land), slaying thousand of enemies, until the final boss. You can play with another player.
No levelling in this one.

Diablo (1997)

Image

Choose a character from three (warrior, sorcerer, rogue), explore a single dungeon (about 16 levels) down to the final boss. A really great ambient.
Mythic !

Darkstone (1999)

Image

A more coloured and 3D clone of Diablo in which you explore more dungeon and fight outside. You choose a character from 8 predefined character classes (2 warriors, 2 thieves, 2 wizards, 2 priests ; one per gender). When playing solo you can choose to play one or two characters (one is directly incarned by the Human player, the other controlled by AI ; you can switch between them at will).

Silver (1999)

Image

Very action-oriented, movement of sword are directed by the mouse. You don't create characters but you can hire some. You can have up to three characters, switching direct control / AI control. Landscapes are 2D pictures, characters and items are in 3D.

Nox (2000)

Image

Three different classes (warrior, druid, wizard). Depending on which one you choose the adventure will be different.

Diablo II (2000)

Image

Unlike the first Diablo, you spend a lot of time outside. 7 classes : barbarian, paladin, sorceress, amazon, necromancer, druid (only in the add-on), assassin (idem) ; a lot of different way to build your character, depending from skills chosen and your gear.

Neverwinter Nights (2002)

Image

D&D "Forgotten Realms" setting and rules. More a RPG than a Hack'n slash, but very action-oriented, especially the second add-on.

Titan Quest (2006)

[img][650:600]http://i65.servimg.com/u/f65/11/35/67/80/00321110.jpg[/img]

A Diablo II clone in a Greek/Egyptian/Sumerian/Chinese mythology setting. A lot of character classes : 8 basic classes (one more in the add-on), you can combine 2 classes.

Do you know others games of this kind ? Post here your suggestions. :D

I never tested these games, they were suggested by other forumers :
Knights of the Round (1994)
Sacred (2005)
Torchlight 2009)

The best new one (while we wait for Diablo III) is Torchlight. Only costs $20 and runs on most computers, but it is a very great game. You can also turn up the difficulty and turn on insta-death and it becomes a roguelike. The game is far and away worth the cost.

That's not what Hack'n slash is necessarily. It's basically any game where you go around and decimate everything with melee weapons. Think of games like Golden Axe and Knights of The Round for an example of what hack'n slash typically is.

There is also Sacred by Ascalon Entertainment. A huge vast world to play in. I have played this one off and on but never have seemed to be able to commit to finishing it.

Ok. I'll correct this part of my text. :)

Actually those are both beat-em-ups.
