I would like to learn how to repair systems but I don't know how I could teach myself. Any ideas?

PC or consoles?

For PCs, it's all about identifying bad hardware and switching components. That's the extent most places will bother doing.

Consoles? I'm pretty sure authorized repair centers show you what to do...similar to PC repair...change out bad parts. Certified training by the company that makes the product.

Beyond that, you'd have to have training or proven skills with electronics (soldering circuit boards) to actually "fix" electronics.

You would also need special kit to solder most computer stuff these days, an ultra fine soldering iron, magnifiers, that sort of thing if you wanted to change out a chip on a PCB.

Take some electronics classes. At the very least, learn how to operate a soldering iron and a screwdriver.

If you have a specific problem that you need help with, you could try asking at the AtariAge.com forums, I've gotten a lot of great help there.
