I play mostly combat style as a mercenary or pirate, so I tend to like fighters the most.
In X3, my favorite ships were M3 class Argon Novas and Split Mambas. Both are decently fast and agile.
As a mobile base early in the game, (it takes many hours of play to attain a capital ship) I like the TL class Split Elephant. The Elephant is fast and handles much better than other TLs, and it can dock 15 fighters, making it the best “poor man’s carrier” in the game.
Once I can buy a capital ship, I usually get the M1 class Split Raptor. It docks 65 fighters has poor shielding, but great speed and agility, and good weapons too.
In XTM, I usually go with the Pirate variant of the M3+ Argon Eclipse. It has good shields, speed, and cargo space for jump fuel, making it a good pirate ship early in the game.
For base ships, I still like the Elephant until I can get my hands on an M7 Pirate Reaver. The Reaver is an incredible frigate with good speed, weapons, and decent shielding. It can easily wipeout a sector full of Xenon Js and Ks. In short, it is the last ship you’ll need in XTM.
As for X3:TC, as I said, I haven’t played it too much because I like my fighters and X3:TC tends to force the player into bigger ships as fighting rank goes up. However, I do remember a special M3 class Paranid Perseus that can be found abandoned in a remote sector. It is a lot of fun to fly, and very deadly when armed with chainguns.
For bigger ships, I really like the M7 Split Panther. It has all the firepower needed to take out much larger M1s and M2s, plus it can dock 32 fighters, making it a nice little pocket carrier.
That’s really the extent of my experience with ships in X3:TC…
