How many of you remember the fighting game Killer Instinct? On the SNES or in the arcades, KI was the greatest fighting game ever created. Rare's subsequent KI2/KI Gold were also excellent fighters.

For those of you who got the chance to play this gem, what did you like about the game? What gameplay elements could have been improved? What were your fondest moments while playing?

I really hope we see a re-release of KI on XBLA, or KI3. ULTRA COMMMMBBBOOOO!

I played the N64 version a bit. I think Killer Instinct is better than the Mortal Kombat series, but not as good as the Street Fighter series. I have an old Nintendo Power issue with the Killer Instinct arcade cabinet on the cover by the way.

What he said. I'm sorry, but some of us are "old-school" enough to remember when Pong was an arcade game... :)

(Ever play an Atari 2600?)

I went with early 90's as being 'old-school', because so many people who call themselves 'old-school' gamers these days tend to tell me the first FPS they ever played was GoldenEye or Half-Life. If the definition of 'old-school' by gamers today is equated with a game like, say, GoldenEye, then yes, I call Killer Instinct 'old-school' in hopes that some might remember KI alongside Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2.

Personally, I call the Atari 2600, alongside cartriges of E.T., Asteroids, and Pong, 'old-school' (the 2600 was the first system I ever had - followed by NES, Genesis, etc.).

I think of old classic video games as ones from before the N64/PS1. It's weird how a lot of younger gamers were born when the Nintendo 64 was already out. Or even the Nintendo Gamecube since it's almost ten years old.

My video gaming goes back to Super Mario Brothers and The Legend of Zelda [I finally got a copy of the second for the original Nintendo. :)] Compared with these, even the original Killer Instinct is so not "old school."

I'm 21 and my first computer was a hand-me-down ZX Spectrum  I was about 2 when I was given it. Loved Manic Miner and Jetpac.

(Back then most games were 2D by the way, those three examples were pionners.)

I got an Atari 2600 and an Intellivision the same Christmas (Atari from my parents, Intellivision from a generous friend of the family who got a bargain on two of them and kept one.) All those kids who picked on me wanted to be friends all of the sudden.

That being said I didn't really like Killier Instinct. It relied too much on people learning combos and combo-breakers. Street Fighter II was far superior in gameplay mechanics and strategy. For similar reasons I didn't like Mortal Kombat 3 or Tekken. I did come to appreciate mechanics in the Tekken games though. I also thought the Virtua Fighter games were way under-rated. But back to the early 90's, there's about a bazillion Neo-Geo fighting games that came out then and most of them were pretty good.

Yeah, Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and the later King of Fighters games are alright (my favorite SNK fighter was KOF 2002 Ultimate Match).

SonicMisaki, that's a great tagline from Alien Soldier you've got posted as your location! Love Seven Force in that game.
