Videogame burnout?
Right now I'm in this state of mind to where every game just looks boring to me. I haven't played a game in 3 days for this reason. I even went to GameStop to buy a new one and everything I looked at I was just like "meh". I have some of the best games ever made and now those look so boring, even though they're not. Fallout, Call of Duty, Splinter Cell, Red Dead Redemption, Forza, Gears of War, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect, Crysis, and all of these games' sequals.....none of them make me say "hmm maybe I'll play this for awhile". I just end up sitting there and staring at my small collection of 360 games (47) and.....thats it. I just stare at them now instead of play them.
Is this videogame burnout or something? The games I want (Gears of War 3, Forza 4, Skyrim, and Battlefield 3) aren't coming out until later this year. I'm hoping Portal 2 and LA Noir might alleviate my burnout symptoms *shrugs*. I'm even thinking about buying a PS3 lol. Not that theres anything wrong with that, but I've always believed in just sticking with one console for its life cycle.
Anyone ever go through a period like this? It sucks.

Yes. A year after discovering video games, it was all I could do. I would obsess about them, neglect important tasks to play them, talk about them obsessively to whomever would listen. Now I am totally bored with them. It's like every thing else in my life. I get all over a thing, run it into the ground, and then get bored with it. This includes people too, unfortunately.

Maybe it's not you the problem, maybe it's the games. Nowaday games sucks. Developper don't take risks anymore, publisher won't let them and the high costs don't help either. We only got dark FPS nowaday. Getting a PS3 may be a idea, Ninokuni and The Last Guardian are getting out on it. You should look at the DS too. Time to expand your horizons beyond the stuck up US culture.

I don't see videogames as idiotic. In many ways they've surpassed movies in more ways then I can possibly explain. You actively take part in the story and shape it rather than watch someone else evolve the story for you.
Anyways, I've been playing for 24 years now. I've had jobs, gf's, obligations, etc but I've always found time to play videogames because I enjoyed the escape from reality. Videogames are very fulfilling for me and always will be, its just I think I've run out of great games to play. Spring/Summer is usually not prime selling points for most developers as they prefer to release blockbuster titles towards the holidays so for the next several months this is probably how its going to be.
I haven't grown out of videogames and I don't think I ever will. I think right now I'm just in limbo....waiting for the next best seller to release.
Now that I think of it.......I got like this back in 2005, slightly after the 360 was released. I was bored with all the PS2 games out there and didn't play anything for weeks. Then I got a 360 and I hadn't slowed down until now. Yep....I think its time for a PS3. I've been dying to play Gran Turismo 5 anyways

Have you ever tried Valkyria Chronicles? One of the most under-rated RPGs ever to exist?

no I have been trying to play Heat Online but my Internet connection is crap so it makes it hard to play games online or play my Playstation 3 because of updates.

Like someone else said I think it's all a part of growing up too, because I've been going through the same thing lately. Now don't get me wrong, I still enjoy playing my games when I want to relax or I have company over who will play with me. However I'm just not as enthusiastic about them as I used to be. I'm no longer obsessively playing games, figuring out how to get games, or hanging around the gaming community on the internet (mostly because I got tired of hearing all the whiners complain about games not being perfect).
I think I will always enjoy playing video games, but it won't be consuming my life as much as it used to which I think is a good thing.
I get it all the time from new games and I step 10 years back and play the old classics that made what the industry is today. Arcanum, Fallout 1/2, Deus Ex and others. Finding that these were much better then what today's industry is dishing out. Also when it comes to video game burnout, I play some Dwarf Fortress that fixes everything right up.
I experienced that a couple of years ago. Even classics like Half-life started to feel like a chore. Along came Halo! Yeah, it's not the most innovative game ever, but it was surprised over how much fun it was. And that it made an emotional impact despite being labeled as a brainless game for the masses.
Most games, movies, tv shows, novels etc. follow a pattern. There's a reason for that; when you break the pattern, people complain. Look at Dragon Age II for example. The story is extremely compelling, but people complain because there isn't one big goal. The more you play, the broader the spectrum becomes and fewer things will impress. But somewhere along the way even games that may seem contrived at first will draw you in, one way or another. If not, you could try different types of games (I personally don't think older ones are better). Or look for some other hobby.
All work and no play makes chinatown a dull girl

I ended up stopping 20 hours in to Dragon Age II and traded in towards..........Bulletstorm (more like Boringstorm) or Crysis 2....can't remember. I still couldn't say what the main goal of Dragon Age II was and thats what lost my attention. It all became just a bunch of side quests tied together. And all of the environments were the same. I kept expecting to be travelling to new and compelling lands but...nope. Same ol' bland city scapes and a few generic dungeons and you have to travel through over and over. I honestly don't see how people can enjoy that game. The first one was incredible. All I can say to Bioware is: Why? Hopefully Mass Effect 3 will have the same effect Mass Effect 2 did after playing Mass Effect 1.
I'm just hoping Bethesda will say "SUPRISE! We're going to go ahead and release Skyrim tomorrow!" *shrugs*

Warning: major spoilers ahead for those who haven't completed Dragon Age II.
When we ventured into the Deep Roads, the narrator said something like "they had no idea what they would find down there". After finishing the game I thought that splitting the story into three acts was a good idea, but the rock wraith wasn't that impressive. But then I got it. Waaaaait... They weren't talking about the rock wraith! It was the lyrium idol that corrupted Knight-Commander Meredith and caused much of the events in act 3. Another turning point is when you find out that Isabela's relic is what's keeping the qunari from leaving. Or maybe it isn't? Maybe the Qunari just use it as an excuse for... I don't know what. They want war? There's a lot of room for speculation.
Aveline and Knight-Commander Meredith, now there we have two unusual female characters.
The funniest side quests were Aveline courting Donnic ("Want me to draw a map of where she wants to touch you?") and Varric's embellished solo fight. I also snickered at party banter like the one ending with "If I see a qunari admiring butterflies, you'll be the first to know", lines like "Andraste's flaming knickers" and battle cries like "Suck on a fireball" and "Bianca, you minx! That was beautiful".
I also found the combat and other mechanics very satisfying. But I'm more into shooters, and I don't like having to constantly fine-tune party behaviour in combat.
You probably missed the good things because of the burnout. Or it could be that you're not mature enough, but given your age, it's probably the lack of investment
Oh, and I wouldn't even consider getting Bulletstorm. It looks like another Singularity: mildly entertaining but ultimately forgettable.
