are there any FPSs that let you start at the base level of a very tall building that's infested with bad guys and you have to make your way, floor by floor to the roof?

Also, how's Crysis 2? Is there a FEAR 2 out yet?

Honestly, there is a level in one fps game that starts at the bottom of a hospital and makes you fight the way to the top. It's in the campaign No Mercy in the L4D games. Seriously, for the amount of times where you fight your way out, you never fight your way in.

Ditto on L4D. I suggest you get the second one on Steam. It comes with all of the levels from the first one. Most fpses today are extremely linear and devolve into shoot-out rounds. L4D is linear, but it's one of those few good fpses that aren't repetitive as hell.

Two levels in Perfect Dark make you fight your way from the ground level to the roof. F.E.A.R. 2 has been out for at least a couple of years (F.E.A.R. 3 comes out June 21). Crysis 2 is an alright game. Nothing I haven't seen before.

Never really liked them apart from Goldeneye for the N64. I can't stand COD and all these new shooters.

I've been jazzed for Crysis 2 for about a year and half when I first heard of it. Got it release day and got all the way to the part where Central Park is lifted out of the ground but then just stopped playing. For some reason the game just didn't live up to what I was hoping. I never played the first one since I don't PC game (and probably couldn't run it anyway) but heard so many great things about and thanked God the second came out for consoles. Anyway, I went back to playing Borderlands, which I have logged more hours on than any game in my life, over 300 easy. I still go back and play some of my files on there but am now playing Bulletstorm. Hope to finish that in the next few days or so.

I don't mind the shooters but they tend to be better played online and the online community for shooters is terrible (whiny, meme spouting 15 year olds :S ).

L4D or L4D2 have some missions where you are going in/escaping buildings. Though it is a really fast paced sort of game, they don't give you much rest with the constantly spawning, fast zombies.

I prefer the term "Doom clone."
