Looking for a certain type of computer rpg game
Ok, I am sure most of you know about the World of Warcraft free w/ itemshop clones, such as Runes of Magic & Gates of Andaron. I get it that WoW is SO darn popular, I do! But, I prefer games such as Everquest II or City of Villains. However, I don't like to pay every month for a game, right? SO, just as in the case w/ WoW, where someone loved the game & didn't love paying every month & whatever & since made the clones, what about free to play clones of the aforementioned EQ2 & CoV????? I would like to see a game where there are such alignments as "Good" & "Bad"! Not just different sides, you know? Anyone know any information? Care to help me out? Every game I have looked up or tried, really hasn't got such good & bad alignments where my toon can play the "bad girl". Any recommendations? Please advise, thank you.
EQ2 was a major addiction for me and has an amazing atmosphere and look...
You'll want to keep an eye on this:
http://www.eq2emulator.net/
They have servers up but only with custom made things as a test - not like eq2.
But, they are working on fully accurate EQ2 as a final goal.
I know exactly the game you are looking for...
Ultima Online Second Age. http://www.uosecondage.com/
You can play this server I'm on, it's free and the game has good and bad. Any action you do such as looting an innocent player, attacking, killing or stealing from can affect your Karma and reputation in the game.
Here's screenshots I took of me playing:

I love PvE! The feeling of being part of a group, of your effort and the effort of the group being equally important. I hobby PvP but say EVE online was not for me, PvP is far to unfriendly, hostile even. If WoW didn't dumb down so much with WotLK expansion I would still be playing.
As for more PvE/social MMOs hrmmm
Possibly runescape, has a fairly decent free area, will want to sub to really get into the group stuff but its only $5 I think.
As stated above D&D online is ok, almost exclusively focusing on solo and group content. You will most likely need to spend some money for higher level content though this can be done with micro-transactions or subbing. Or you could spend months farming it for free :/. It has alignment but it has no real impact on gameplay except making people roll lawful good to use some of the best items.
Ragnarok Online has a free server, though this is more a grindy game, will need to grind a LOT to get to the fun end game grouping.
Ultima Online is one of, if not the first, graphical MMOs. Being so old I imagine fun grouping would also take some time to level up too. Also its full loot, full PvP. I'd suggest finding a guild quickly. Haven't played it though so this is just guestimating.
As far as I know there isn't any major (read: fun + popular) MMO with any alignment system. You could try looking up Star Wars: The Old Republic (SW: ToR). It is not going to be released till 20111 unfortunately. However it will feature an alignment system, actual quest paths (good and evil, rather than just go there, do that). It is looking to be an awesome MMO and if anything is going to be a threat to WoW its this.
You'll learn to like it. Why play a game with no risk?
PVM is boring without the pk risk, makes it more exciting!

What is "PVM"? Is that another term for "PVE"? I like to play w/ no risk!
While it is free they do have micro transactions for things like exclusive player classes, additional character slots, and different premium items.
But don't you have to pay in order to play a Drow?

What is "subbing"? I tried Runescape & I did not like it at all. Does Ragnarok have "good & bad"? I will check out that Star Wars thing when it comes out next year, or whenever, as long as I don't have to pay every month. What do you mean about DDO, "It has alignment but it has no real impact on gameplay except making people roll lawful good to use some of the best items."?
subbing- subscribing, aka paying monthly to play.
PVM- PvE would be raids and dungeons, PvM would also include solo killing monsters, probably loosely refer to anything that isnt PvP or crafting.
SW: ToR will be a subscription MMO, it may have other payment options but I really doubt it will have any free play option.
Ragnarok online is rather simple. As I said it is really about endlessly grinding to finally get high enough level to do group stuff.
D&D online has alignment, but is restricted in that you cannot choose evil. The only impact this has on gameplay is that certain items are restricted by alignment. Most creatures you fight are evil so there is a strong incentive to make a good character to use a good weapon (which does bonus damage to evil). Sometimes spells are used against players that only harm good characters so being neutral can sometimes be helpful. Beyond that I don't think alignment plays any significant role.
You don't need to subscribe to play drow either but it isn't free. You need to earn enough "reputation" to unlock it, which is earnt* by finishing the quests/dungeons. Most of the dungeons above level 14 also require unlocking, either by spending points earnt with reputation or buying them or subscribing.
If you are looking for a more role play style game where alignment matters you could try a text based game. They are played online, usually have small communities but they should be helpful and friendly. Of course these have no graphics, just text.
MUDs are what the first online games were. There is a lot of them, some have been around for a very long time. I'd suggest looking through the top MUDs list sites and reading up. Just search "MUD"
You could try searching "D&D text based online" but I'm not sure how successful that would be. Wizards of the Coast apparently don't like people making online versions of D&D, rather silly really. Perhaps other users here could know some sites for online D&D role playing.
World of Darkness (aka WoD) also have a very good setting. I remember seeing a few links for online versions but I can't remember them. WoD has an awesome role play setting, more than just about alignment, but retaining humanity or losing it too. As I said I can't remember how I found the list, you would have to hunt around for online versions of it. I've just remembered that there will be a WoD MMO soon, next couple of years, but again this will likely be subscription based too.
Last option is to search "web browser online games". Usually turn based and played straight out of the internet browser. These are more bored-at-the-office style of games but for that role they can be decent.
As far as any MMOs I don't think there are any that have any significant role play or alignment system at the moment. It takes a lot of effort and skill to implement right, I would also guess a lot of publishers get turned off by this sort of thing as its kinda "geeky" and not "cool".
*earnt- never knew this was a rare word heh.
UO is a fun and popular MMORPG and has an alignment system. I play on a FREE server that mimicks how UO was in 1998. It's fun. You should play it, join my guild =- )
Trust me, once you play UO you'll never touch another 3d "online RPG'. UO is fun and offers an expensive you won't find anywhere else.
In UO if you kill players you lose karma and eventually if you kill too many you will "flag red" and can't goto town, buy from NPCS and usually get attacked on sight by "innocent players(flag blue).
UO is a game where your actions mean something.
Technically UO is the only TRUE sandbox/MMORPG. There is no other game like UO.
WOW is not an MMORPG. WOW is diablo 2 with 3d graphics and more features.
Eve is okay I heard, but I'm sure it's nothing compared to UO.

WoW is an MMOG with RPG elements (stat system, items slots and item progression, classes, etc), technically this makes it an MMORPG but it just doesn't really have any RP

EVE is hard to describe. I am absolutely sure freewaydog will not like it. EVE basically has full loot, full PvP, there isn't even safe areas like UO. In addition stealing, scamming, griefing are all accepted types of gameplay. Some players have stolen billions of in game currency, untold hundreds of ships, thousands of items, etc that took probably months or years to amass, straight from the corp (aka guild) they have been with for probably months or years. There is no restitution, the ex corp can only hate you while you join another corp rich as a king. Pretty much the only thing you can't do is steal accounts.
I really can't comment on UO. I do know it is huge and gives players a lot of freedom. From what I understand though alignment is more due to your reputation with fellow players and your actions more than real RP style quests.
What do you mean "real RP style quests".
Also, UO had more role playing than any other "MMORPG". I'm talking REAL role players, lol.
Old RP guild from UO in 1998 - http://www.grey-company.org/index.cgi
Also, there is griefing on UO but there are ways to prevent being taken advantage of. Learning the game is one reason.
I find that getting griefed on WOW and other "p**** carebear games" leave me more angry than being griefed on UO. At least in UO justice can be served.
in WOW people can talk trash, ninja loot and be stupid and you can't do anything about it.
WOW sucks big time, it's only for money so Blizzard can do a better job at Starcraft 2 and diablo 3. It's a shallow game with hardly any gameplay.
@freewaydog
You don't have to pvp, you can join a guild for protection and hunt with them. Pks won't attack a group of people that are more than them usually. You just gotta try the game out, I'll even help you get started.
You have no options reallyu freewaydog. You either pay $$$ for carebear games like WOW that hold your hand or you man it up and play UO for free and have more fun overall.
