I am quite a heavy gamer and
a firm believer in games as art. I'm not gonna rant here, but don't judge games until you have played at least three of the following:
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 -- Mature (I say T and so does the Japanese rating board, but ESRB disagrees...)
Earthbound (It goes for about $100 on eBay!) -- Everyone
Final Fantasy IV or
VI -- Teen
Okami -- Teen
Metal Gear Solid 4 -- Mature (Most people would say 2 but I haven't played it YET, so I can't judge)
And don't judge games by any of the following: (These are not BAD games, just not as good to judge by as they are "dumb fun", which is good, but nothing to judge by. I own all of the following and do not hate them)
Halo -- Mature
Call of Duty -- Mature
Final Fantasy VII (I'm not a hater, but I do think it's overrated. I'd give it a 6.5/10) -- Teen
ANY MOVIE GAME (Well, most...) -- Various
Sports games -- Various
Sorry if I seem defensive, but video games, comic books (or graphic novels, or sequential art, if you prefer), and animation are criminally under appreciated as art forms. You don't HAVE to like it, just don't say you don't like books 'cause you read a bad one, y'know?
(Seriously, I'm sorry if I came off too harshly. I have a tendency to be pretty blunt
)
I agree with you on games as an artform. I love indie games and games with toolsets because of the unrestrained freedom they have to make the game that was originally conceived without meddling publishers imposing profit algorithms.
I'm your opposite when it comes to Metal Gear Solid, I've played 2 and 3 but not 4.
