I gave up hope when Nintendo themselves said it wasn't happening. I can play the game on real hardware (and have already beat it), so as far as I'm concerned, it's really only NoA's (huge) loss.
If they really cared at all, then why have they still not re-released Earthbound on VC?
From their point of view, they really have no incentive to do so, as I'm almost 90% certain that companies can't get access to used games sales records. Believe me, if they were able to do so, I'm fairly certain we would have had another Assassin's Creed game starring Altaiir(sp?) with AC2 gameplay MUCH faster. And Mother 3 would have been released long ago.
Earthbound sales in the new game market at that time, were, admittedly, absolute s**t at the time. It only picked up in sales a few years afterwards, after word got out on internet forums about it, and most of those sales were used sales, on top of that. Its really started to shine since then, and Mother 3 would be a great way to revive the series, possibly taking it in a Final Fantasy-esque direction. By that I don't mean increasingly worse titles, but more installments on the series, letting the developers take their time and possibly keeping it in the 8-bit or 16-bit style graphics and lightly orchestrated music(think Braid style music) and releasing it on services like PSN, XBLA, and Nintendo's eShop, and maybe Steam as well(depends on how well it sells on console services)
After playing a fan-translated version of Mother 3(I can't read Japanese, hoping to start studying it soon from a Japan native) I can think of several different ways they could take the series and run with at least a couple of them and do GREAT in terms of sales.
The word about the Mother/Earthbound series is out now. They would do great in this day and age.
