When I was a wee bit younger, video games were my favorite past time but now that I'm a bit older, it seems like it has lost its special touch. I'm not sure what it is exactly because I don't think video games have become worse overtime, but has this happened to anyone else? Is it because I've reached a certain intellectual threshold that games are now boring? Is it because I've gone under an intellectual or memory threshold that makes game seem boring as part of a disease process like schizophrenia? Is it because my social imagination or anhedonia or something has increased making it harder for me to "bond" to the characters and find enjoyment out of the story lines? Have I've been over-exposed to video games and now nothing seems truly novel and, thus, interesting? Or... have I just become a boring old adult? xD

Anyway, have video games become boring to you or have they been boring to you in the past? If so, do you know why? I'd imagine the cause of me becoming bored of them is pretty common, so if you know why you've become bored of video games, then maybe that's my deal! Sharing is caring. :D

I know what you mean. I've been playing games less and less over the past few years. I'm just not really stimulated as much by them anymore.

I think the problem is overexposure.

No matter how much you like something, if you do it too much you're sure to burn yourself out...

Growing up, I loved high fantasy RPGs and I read fantasy books and played fantasy games all the time. I consumed so much fantasy that I eventually made myself sick of the entire genre--sort of like eating candy until you barf I guess... :P

To this day I love RPGs,, but I can't play them if they're in a fantasy setting like WoW, ect...

The Stoics were on to something with moderation and self denial.

If you truly enjoy something and you want to continue to enjoy it, you need to do it in moderation and take occasional breaks from it BEFORE it starts to get boring.

That way you won't get overexposed, and things will stay fresh and interesting.

Same here! I don't know why, but video games when I hit college just became completely boring. Meanwhile I picked up on reading and playing Dagorhir which is a fighting game similar to a LARP but less cheesy with no magic and you actually hit people hard with foam weapons.

I wouldn't say I have been loosing interest or whatever though I haven't been gaming as much as I usually do though I have been in a state of depression lately and that is probably the reason I don't game at the moment. Gaming is my interest and I will probably be gaming my entire life. I just have been a bit depressed and haven't felt like gaming lately, plus I have no money for newer games so I am stuck with my older games.

Maybe you've just lost interest? There are games that I used to love. They were my life but now I can't play them due to boredom. For a while I couldn't play video games at all without getting bored. Maybe you're done with video games for a while or you could try switching genres. Try something you've never played.

It's an age thing for sure.
I used to love playing games and many a homework assignments never got done because of my NES or Genesis or what ever I was playing. But it was definitely a switch that turned off around 17/18ish.

Every year or so since I do get an urge to play something, i'll go out and buy a few games on a whim but I'll usually get a few hours into them and then never touch them. Only every couple years do one of those games actually suck me in for a good week of hard core gaming.

Kind of been in that mood lately and looking around at something to get into. Tons of talk from coworkers and gaming friends of all the good stuff that's been coming out/due out soon but I've kind of been intentionally avoiding going up to the local best buy because i know i'll probably drop like $150 on stuff that'll sit wrapped for a year anyways lol.

The brain tends to crave less novelty as you get older.

Though, we live in very stimulating times, therefore, I suggest you try out different genres and/or games.

I find that games that I found exciting in my youth are still just as exciting today.

I've found that most modern games are very "I guess this is fun for a half-hour or so, okay, now I'm burnt-out and need to quit playing."

If you have a drive to play video games they can be exciting for a very long time. I play SC2 a lot and its still not boring, because it has a great competitive aspect to it. I get bored quick of story driven games though (There are exceptions)

I've noticed that I like playing games from before 2007 more than newer stuff. Probably because a lot of newer games are just first-person shooters or something similar. Seems like before '07 there was a greater variety of games.....

some games i still enjoy as much as i did in my "gaming prime"
but i dont have the need to constantly play something like i did before, besides they divert a lot of intention so i would rather focus on one or two games at a time.
i feel the urge to fiddle with my arduino more than anything at the moment, work has been hectic and i am about to move to a larger apartment (when we find one)

if i feel bored i often enjoy games less than when i try to desperately get a bit of gaming time, mood matters

Video games are much more fun than watching television shows and movies in my opinion. Almost everybody does one or both of those on a regular basis.
