Have any of you played games that are generally good but have some annoying flaws preventing them from truly excelling? One instance occurs frequently in Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga, where death in battle happens frequently, in which case you're forced to go through all the unskippable company screens (which in my mind should *always* be skippable since we don't freaking need to know every single freaking company responsible for making a game) before finally being able to reload your last save file. Please be polite when you post, as I've gotten into some nasty debate when pointing out this flaw on the GameFAQs forums.

I agree. It's not fun when you just want to get straight back into the action.

Yay digital devil saga.

Or you spend hours to find a legendary weapon only to get more powerful weapons on the way.

Checkers. It's the worst.

When your opponent "Kings" you, he's not required to give you a real crown.

I've been playing the Grand Theft Auto series since the very beginning, and while the games are generally very good, they have some flaws that sometimes make me want to throw the controller through the TV set. Chief among these are the time limit missions, which is the cheapest and laziest possible way of making a game more difficult. Also, while the targeting systems have been getting progressively better, there are still plenty of moments when you die because the game will lock on to an enemy who's 100 yards away instead of the guy who's right in front of you and unloading shotgun shells into your body.

I tried to get into Red Dead Redemption for the PS3... fantastic story but shooting the rifle was very difficult to control, even at the easiest settings! Too many buttons!! Good thing I only borrowed it...

Recently XCOM. Many many bugs in that game. It probably could have used an extra few months of QA. Still my favorite game this year despite that. Fez has the same troubles. That game crashed on me several times.

Discounting technical issues, in terms of flawed game design, a good (bad) example is Ninja Gaiden Black (xbox). Because of the camera control and unwieldy bow aiming. Because of the water level. And the inexplicable locations of a couple of the save points. Amazing game. One of the best games from that console generation but man some of those things suck.

The Jet Set Radio series.

It requires you to do tricks and jumps in some parts of the game, but the controls are flawed that it can be rage inducing at times.

Otherwise it's a great series!

I'll add another: games that don't include playing time (like the Etrian Odyssey titles) or make it difficult to view playing time, for instance, only when you save (like SMT:DDS).

Final Fantasy 6 having some rather long convoluted dungeons, but not having escape ropes. Also outside of the Moogle Charm there aren't any "repels" either. And the random battles are kind of lengthy and frequent and involved, it gets exhausting after a while. Oh and requiring you take up a relic slot for the privilege of walking fast. All I've got left is the final dungeon and I'm just dreading it. Thinking about using a game genie to turn off random battles.

Go on the desert south of Maranda (And use the doom/death spell to kill those nasty giant worms) or to Fanatic Tower to grind for magic. Once you have twelve characters filled with magic you'll be ready for anything! If it's still hard combine a Offering and a Genji Glove on one character or use the spell Vanish followed by Doom.
Also, there is "escape ropes" in Final Fantasy VI, the Warp spell and the Warp Stone.

Been playing the new XCOM and horey s**t is it awesome! Still haven't finished though~

My gripe with it though is that, enemies/me can shoot through walls (though for the most part, this actually helps you more), and that there is a way too big of a gap between Normal and Classic.

In Normal mode if you run across a 10cm gap, whoever's looking at that gap with "Overwatch" will most likely miss.
And if they do hit you, you don't take much damage anyway.

In Classic, you better not move a muscle or these "Overwatch" f*****s will annihilate your entire team through walls.
For example I was running behind a truck and I got one-shot'd from the smallest gap you could think of.
Though I think this issue is only with Thin-men since they seem to have 95% hit/crit chance most of the time.

XCOM has always been hard (oh god the original D:), but imo this should belong to the Impossible difficulty.
I'm loving Normal as I still tend to get killed, just wish the accuracy of some enemies was lower on Classic~
But I guess I'll have to wrestle with this issue on next playthrough.

Still an amazing game! Wish me luck on my Ironmode Classic after finishing Ironmode Normal ;_;

Sonic Adventures 2: Battle for the GCN. It's among one of my favourite games, but I feel like they should have worked on the crappy shooting or even taken it out and added more action and treasure (my BF would disagree and just say all action) levels. Also feel like the cameras could have used more work, and I'm not just saying this because of the time. Even for the time, they could have done better. I think especially when you have to go to more hidden places on the map for the 2-5th emblem for each course, it just gets dodgy and actually nearly impossible in one case (for me anyway).

I agree with Sonic Heroes, the controls kind of wreck it for me.

Also, I feel like Sleeping Dogs has a really crappy shooting system. You kind of get used to it after a while, but since over and over you're forced into shooting from the missions, I feel like it should have been worked on a bit more. I looooove the game otherwise, I just want to shoot the shooting XD

I feel Halo 4 could have used more variety in enemies. After Reach having had the most(with the exception of the Flood), it was a bit of a disappointment to only have so many different types to fight. I also think that it was a huge mistake to get rid of Firefight rather than expanding on it, and while Spartan Ops isn't bad, it's not really a replacement.

Arcanum has some pretty stupid balance issues and limitations that can definitely ruin the game towards the end. It's really frustrating, because otherwise, the game is one of the very best crpg's out there.
