What's the most suitable type of touch screen for DS, Wii U, and other Nintendo touch-screen consoles?
Capacitive (like that in iPhone or Samsung Salaxy S) 29%  29%  [ 4 ]
Resistive (where you poke a stylus to play) 43%  43%  [ 6 ]
Both 29%  29%  [ 4 ]

...Nintendo's products with touch screens (DS, Wii U, etc.) were capacitive (like the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S) instead of resistive (one with a stylus)? Imagine Super Mario, Pokemon, etc. being played on multi-touch screens with fingers instead of poking a pen and have scratches all over the screen.

What's your take on that?

I was actually disappointed at learning iPod Touches were capacitive. I prefer using a stylus over using my finger as a stylus is more precise. Plus, even if styli (isn't that just the best word ever?) leave scratches, fingers leave smudges. :P

I'd rather have smudges, because that's easy to clean off. Scratches don't really go away.

I utilise screen protectors on the DS/DSi/3DS and can't complain about there being any scratches. I'm okay with Nintendo's touch screens.

You don't actualy need a stylis to play DS games. You can use your fingers on them too. It's just easier with a stylis. I lost my DS stylis a long time ago and use my wacom pen to play with my DS.

I prefer using a stylus, I can't stand finger smudges.

But in most games I'll take buttons over touchscreen.

Well, quite frankly, I was disappointed with Nintendo when they launched the 3DS and the Wii U. Nintendo, who had been using resistive screens (which I perceive as old-school and low-end), could have done better and use capacitive touch screens, which are less scratch-proof than styli-based touch screens. What's more, with multi-touch functions, game developers can do more than make their players poke screens with pens and stuff.

Both. Some games do fine with finger touching. I prefer playing FPS's with a stylus and buttons.

From what I remember, Nintendo's touch-screens can do multi-touch, but chose not to support it.

...but I might be thinking of pressure sensitivity (which the Colours! homebrew utilizes).

I can't imagine multi-touch being too useful in DS games anyway. Besides, after the initial "Woo! Gimmick!" period wore off, most DS games went back to traditional control methods.

Hmm... Resistive screens, with their current make-up, do not support multi-touch as easily as capacitive screens do.

I was thinking as well of the convenience of capacitives vs. resistives, which I believe Nintendo failed to grasp. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the way I see it.

I could understand Nintendo's rationale of keeping resistive in the DS, which has a smaller screen, and therefore will require something small to poke the screen, but personally, I was disappointed when the Wii U controller was resistive instead of capacitive. The screen was big, and Nintendo could have done something better than that.
