Anyone into PBBGs? Persistent Browser Based Games?

I like playing these in the winter when I'm shut in. Am usually unemployed in the winter, and biking around town isn't very exciting for someone with frostbit fingers and toes.

I'm taking another crack at Grepolis this winter. Did "The West" last winter, Grepolis before that and Evony before that.

What's the persistent part exactly?

The game never stops. It keeps going, even when you sleep.

Things happen pretty slowly, so there's a lot of real-time waiting involved. Strategy and group cooperation are the main skills involved.

The game I'm playing now, Grepolis, is kind of like Sim City. You slowly build up a town. It's ancient Greece themed. So, for example, you build a farm and it takes 1 hour to build. So you go do other stuff, come back and then build something else. After you build to a certain point, you can attack other players and try to conquer each other's cities. But when you send your attack, it can take hours or even a couple days to reach the target and come back.

I like them because they're free to play, and sporadic. You don't have to sit in front of it for 4 hours at a stretch to enjoy it. 2 minutes of playing, 2 hours of working on the house, 2 minutes of playing, 2 hours of cooking and taking a shower.

Oh yeah, I've played one of those before. Had to manage a city or two over a long period of time. It was pretty fun. I can't remember the name of it though. It was quite a while back.

I just checked out the website and it reminds me of Age of Empires 2 or Empire Earth, I used to love playing those games until online support got cancelled for them. I'll definitely check this out, I really love strategy games and the real time waiting concept for it sounds like a great idea. I really dislike death match rush games when it comes to strategy, it defeats the purpose of the game.

I used to play Urban Dead and Nexus War, but the two sucked up so much of my time that I had to quit entirely and leave.

Which is too bad, because I loved those games. Urban Dead is still going, at least.
