P2P MMORPG'S WORTH THE MONTHLY FEE
Hiya
I'm just wondering if anyone could recommend some good P2P MMORPG'S to me.
I've thought about WoW, but I hated the free trial, and tried it at least 4 times, given 2-6 hrs per try. Still, from what I'm told the cool stuff happens at the lvl cap but with all of the expansions it would be so freaking expensive... Ugh! I also heard WoW has been dumbed down, in order to attract a large audience. I cannot stand games that do that. Plus who am I kidding. I'm a PVP head, and I doubt I could become anything but a bug to be squashed by the long time members.
I would just like to know what you play and enjoy. I'm tired of the F2P Game I am playing.
Please no high spec requirements my computer is only so good.

Dark Age Of Camelot is a former of itself in terms of population. Guess I should have mentioned that I would prefer these games to have somewhat of a large community.
Warhammer online.. Hmm I have heard about that one. It's a quest grinder, right? In that case, I will scratch that game off the list. I can't stand just doing quest after quest after quest. It gets so boring for me.
Aion, from what I can tell if going to be a F2P or at least F2P with subscription models, perhaps Item Mall/Cash Shop. I forget which version recently went F2P, but I think it was the EU version. I have looked it up in recent reviews and the forums. They say the population is too small, the maps are not big, and there's not enough content to keep players interested. Looks like it is only a matter of time until aion US goes "F2P"
Bounty Bay is apparently F2P in the US. I don't care for pirate games though. Thanks for the advice though guys. Sigh, maybe MMO's just aren't for me this year... or maybe even the one after. I find it so hard to get interested in MMORPG's these days, and to stay interested is also very difficult. Sadly, MMORPG's are my favorite game genre... I used to play EverQuest... man that was a fun game. I can't seem to get in to EQ2 though.

If you're after something for a more 'grown up' audience than WoW (and a game which is anything but dumbed down), there is always EVE:Online.
(caution, loud music)

Over the course of the last year, the company behind the game, CCP, got a lot of grief over not listening to their players, and started to lose a lot of subscriptions, but they really turned around and impressed everyone with the winter expansion, and now one of the biggest complaints on the forums, is that people no longer have anything to complain about (they really did fix a lot of the problems that players had with the game). Anyway, I cancelled my final WoW account for the last time (Blizzard just ignored all the complaints on their forums), and resubbed the 2 EVE accounts I'd suspended.
The game is extremely complex, and requires that you learn a huge amount to understand absolutely everything that it's possible to do in it. There are equivalents to a lot of the other careers in other MMOs, with industry, mining, missions (questing), incursions (raiding), but the PVP is way ahead of what you'll find in any other MMO. You die in EVE, you don't get to respawn with all your gear intact. You get your ship blown up, and you have to buy another (if you're not in the kind of corporation that replaces your ships so long as you fight for them). And the fleet vs fleet battles can be absolutely huge.

In that video he mentions Red vs Blue, which is basically a pair of corporations in the game, that are constantly in a state of war against each other (which means they can attack each other in high-security space without concord interfering). They'll accept players of any age who are interested in endless PVP. Alternatively, if you'd like a more rounded introduction to the game, there is another corporation, EVE University, which was set up to help new players get past the huge learning curve. They have courses that cover practically every part of the game, and anyone who graduates should have no problems finding a corporation that suits their interests, as the Uni is very highly regarded in the game (I'm in EVE University, and don't plan to leave any time soon, as I'm still learning after a year in the game).
Lastly, EVE does not have separate servers where you could be on a different realm from your friends. There is just one server for everyone, and at the moment it's averaging between around 25k and 45k players online over the course of the day. I don't know how many subscribers they have in total, but the game has been running longer than WoW, and unlike that game, isn't losing customers (in fact the fixes brought a lot back).

holy crap 25 thousand people on the same server, that is huge. what kind of server is that anyway. something holy heck powerful i'm guessing. wow had about several hundred and the damn server bogged down all the time, and server lag drives me crazy. i can't imagine the lag 25k people can generate.
but free pvp is the one thing about any mmo that can deter me from ever trying it. and the fact that you get punished that bad for getting ganked and not having the skill to defend yourself, ouch, and how is this game not losing subsribers? sounds like hell on earth to me. i already learned my lesson in conquer one time to many.

Location: in my own little tamarillo jungle,
they use a large park of servers with each region using a different virtual server run on that park,
when a larger number of players enter a single system more resources are dedicated to that virtual instance, though the largest trade hubs have run on dedicated servers for a while now as they require a huge response with thousands of people in the same system.
as i understand it they use their own software for this purpose and it is quite impressive.

they made a program that powerful, impressive. there are tons of other mmos that get bogged down by just a few hundred. i have to say though very cool.
but in computers what is a park? the only park i know of is the ones made to have fun in. i know squat about servers only that they are powerful but that's really it.
but they must have some high tech stuff, i need to see if some videos of it are on youtube i have never seen that many people on one mmo server before. i bet the wars that they have are awesome.

Well here's the latest devblog on how they're handling lag:
http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&nbid=3284
I love how CCP are willing to share what they're doing with the players, and keep us up to date about what they're doing, while I really hated how Blizzard treated all of their customers like idiots, and essentially lied to us about wanting to fix things.

i can agree there, blizz is a typical big company. all we are are income to them. at least they aren't mooching off of me anymore i quit a while ago i was an addict and still go through withdrawls every so often.
that's cool how they are keeping the players up to date on the status of the servers and things like that. blizz would often take a bloody decade getting a patch in then would make up some bs to cover their butts. at least these guys are honest and upfront, not many companies like that anymore.
are the ships really small on this game i was looking up some pvp battles on youtube was having a hard time figuring out what little dots were the players and which ones weren't. it also looks holy hell complex, people in wow didn't have half that much stuff on the screens, this one guy had 6 or so info boxes, i was wondering how he could keep all the chaos straight.
i wouldn't last one day on this thing, espeashily with free pvp i got hunted on conquer so much i ended up hating pvp with a passion.

This is the range of ship sizes for the Amarr race:

The PvP is pretty avoidable in high sec, where concord are guaranteed to destroy anyone who attacks you first. You just have to have the sense not to fly something with expensive modules or cargo, and no tank, as most suicide ganking is done where the cost of the ships needed to destroy the target before Concord show up, is lower than the value of the loot they can pick up after. That leaves a few genuine gankers who blow up ships for a laugh, but they'll be doing it at a loss.
One of the changes in the latest expansion was that there are no longer insurance payouts for people who get destroyed by Concord, so they now have to pay more to gank a target (who will get the insurance, although it still only covers a fraction of the value of their ship's hull).
Making money is pretty easy once you've got established in the game, and most players should be able to pay for their game time through in game activities (incursions in particular are a great way to make currency, but they do require a good ship, that will take several months to train for. Basically 5 hours of incursions should pay for a month's game time).

Starcraft seems like it would be fun and extremely full of depth, but I could never get into space-spaceship games, and water battles, or airplane/jet combat type of games. I guess I'm just a ground based player type. I also read Starcraft can take a pretty hefty machine, especially in the highest settings. I like to have classes like mage-shaman-champion-knight-paladin-cleric-necromancer-bourg-artisan-shooter types, and races like human-gnome-panda-other random monster types... I know it's typical.

i guess the person making the video had the camera zoomed way out, because everything looked like dots. so there isn't much ganking, if there is a free trial i could check that out. but i was on a non pvp server in wow and even when my name turned to green and i was flagged even if i was in a city and safe i got horribly paranoid. just being flagged bothered me, brought back all those bad memories.
in conquer there were nasty penalties for ganking. if you got black named your character would drop their equiped items if killed, if you got killed by a guard you wound up in jail. and pkers couldn't even go near a city because the guards would go ballistic on their butts. but the ganking and pking was horribly bad even with all the downsides. i couldn't log on for an hour without dying 4 times. and even if i wanted to i couldn't have defended myself the pkers were all super powerful and not even high levels stood a chance against them.
but anyway i checked the site out a bit i have to say i like this company alot, their news update was pretty funny. they are the first company that seems human, and they talk about the players like family or friends. i have to say i never expected to find a company like that. i like how they were making jokes about the server when it ran bad and they didn't blame the players. they sound like a pretty fun group. i thought companies like this didn't exist anymore.
but i have to say i've always been a fan of futuristic things and awesome space battles, which is why i got hooked on xenosaga so fast. i could at least check it out, there seems to be alot of good things around this game, not to much hate getting spread around about it. that eases my mind a bit.
